Saw my friend and internist today, two weeks earlier than my appointment was originally scheduled. He goes in for robotic prostate cancer surgery next week. Now, I know that I shouldn’t laugh, BUT he had his first cystoscopy this week!!! Oh, the complaints!!!! HE DIDN’T LIKE IT!! A FEMALE nurse prepped him!! OH HORROR!! Then the urologist told him to watch the “tv screen” but he claims he just kept his eyes closed the entire time!!! Poor Baby!!!

And yes, I do realize that the males of the species may be a bit more uncomfortable with the procedure than the female, and I do realize that his prostate is no doubt very uncomfortable, BUT I have to admit I found some of his story somewhat humorous!!

I got a chuckle as well. While I was going through all this bladder cancer stuff, my uro found a lump in the prostate. My GP said “BE SURE YOU GETTING THE NUMBING STUFF” for when I was going to get the prostate biopsies. The GP said “IT REALLY HURTS”.

My Uro then said they usually don’t use the numbing stuff. I said OK, let’s just do it. Felt like little rubber band snaps or something. No big deal. Funny thing is I had to get it done a year later and the Uro said the numbing stuff is now standard protocol.

Told my GP he was a wuss! :)

Scariest part of the procedure for me was seeing a condom draped over the anal probe they use to get the biopsy samples. Once I saw how skinny the actual tool probe was, I felt a bit more at ease.

At least I don’t need to get prostate exams anymore!!!!

I had to chuckle at your post, though am sorry your internist has prostate cancer. My husband recently had to have a cystoscopy when he had some bleeding for about a day. We go to the same urologist, very nice guy. Hubby didn’t even have to take his pants all the way off, had no discomfort, and was all clear. He kept his eyes open the whole time and even picked his head up to watch the proceedings. The urologist didn’t have the TV monitor on, but offered to let my husband look in the scope to see how nice and clear his bladder was, which my husband did (male anatomy being what it is, and given the use of the flexible cystoscope, this was not difficult). I was jealous, because I still have some discomfort during cystoscopies and for a bit of time afterward (due to my own particular anatomy). :S
