Local Urologist Cautions Mitomycin C

Interesting. When I asked my doctor if he would administer Mitomcyn C after he resected my tumors, he said he would not because several of his patients had had bad reactions to the drug. Later, in my case, he said he had thinned the bladder wall and wouldn’t consider it at that time.

I have no idea whether he is ultra cautious or really smart, of course.

I didn't find anything specific, but I did find about some of the risks....
.

Septicemic deaths.....is that septic shock?

I don't mean to scare anyone, I'm just relaying information that my doctor gave me. What he said was that someone died, there was a perforation in the bladder, and the Urology group is no longer using Mitomycin C.

Overcautious? I wish I could find out more about this...

I googled too and didn't see anything.  But, the doc definitely said no more Mitomycin.
He also said that the bladder in question had a perforation.  I just assumed that meant that it hit the blood stream. Those were my words. I'm beginning to wonder if this was something that happened locally.  I'm still researching.

Good to hear from you, Tim.  It's good to know that your life is full.

Your friend,

my understanding is that Mitomycin is also deliverable as an IV chemotherapeutic agent - obviously under controlled conditions - so it entering the bloodstream wouldn't be fatal by definition. also, banning a substance for an isolated freak accident seems a bit over cautious. it's used squillions of times all over quite safely. let us know where you get with your research rosemary. i did a quick google and couldn't find anything in relation to this.

hope you are well by the way. ive been a bit out of the loop recently...too busy!

Well, I got an earful at my Uro visit today.

The Doc tells me that the clinic has discontinued use of Mitomycin C.

He explained that there was a warning issued sometime in the last couple of months. Evidently someone had a perforation of the bladder during administration and the solution entered the bloodstream and was fatal.

I'll see if I can find out more about this on the net....

Here we are once again where the road splits and we don't know which way to go. It seems to happen a lot with us. :-X
