I was just using BCG as an example. Even normal conditions have "funny looking"
cells!!

It is hard to get doctors over a holiday weekend!! And that is always when we need them!

But seriously, I don't think there is anything to be concerned about. But do ask the doctor when you get hold of him!! I know that everyone is going to electronic records, but I am not sure that things should be posted without someone available to interpret them. We do not all speak "medical."

Thanks Sara, but he has not had BCG...just mitomycin and that was 2 years ago. He was TaG1 when diagnosed and BCG was not really recommended at that time. He did have a follow up TURB 3 months later with another mitomycin wash and they did that blue light procedure as well

We paged the doc at 3:30 pm this afternoon but no response. He prides hinself about how quickly he gets back to patients...not this time I guess:(

PLEASE calm down...hard to do, I know. One major reason that they still do the definitive exam for bladder cancer by cystoscopy and then TURB if deemed necessary instead of just sending a urine sample for cytology is that the urine cytology tests very often come back with false positive results and cannot be depended on. They are an indicator that something might need investigating further, but are not proof of anything.

That being said, no-where in the report does it appear to say that there are cancer cells. There were a lot of "benign urothelial cells" ie, normal looking cells, and a very few (ie, rare) that were atypical...that is slightly funny looking. This is not a diagnosis of anything. It could be that the cells were somewhat strange looking due to BCG or some other treatment or just from the handling that they got before the tests were done.

Yes, you should definitely ask the urologist for his interpretation, but do not over think this one.

Husband was diagnosed with Ta low grade bladder cancer Dec. 2012. His checkups have all been good since then. We see a uro/ oncologist at Nothwestern Memrial in Chicago.

He had a routine cysto May 21 st. Uro said " all clear" visually. Voided urine sample came back clear, no blood or bacteria. Today we get an electronic message on his "my chart" that cytology showed " rare atypical urotheliall cells" as well as "benign urothelial cells". We have deduced rare means not abundant and atypical means not malignant but not normal either.

Have been trying to reach doc ever since we read the report, but no one has called back. Has this happened to anyone else and now what? We are in a panic .
