Yes George, deep breaths for all of us. I guess the " my chart" feature is both good and bad. Good when a doc can readily explain things and not so good when he isn't available. Moral of story is try not to panic...or lose a good nights slerp :(

I am relieved to read this group of posts. I should be read by everyone here.
We all get news and then WAY Overthink it. I remember the first visit that used the word cancer and I started to make plans for a bucket list, and end of life decisions.

But this cancer thing really does bring out the shock in all of us.
Waiting to talk to a Dr is the Longest wait in the world.

I am glad this worked out. There may be a next time and any news should be treated with a ..... DEEP BREATH. And another.

George

Hi Alan, sorry this happened to you. My husbands was not a morning voided sample, but a sample done after the cystoscopy where the uro does a washing of the bladder. Apparently the instrumentation itself can cause irritation( no kidding. Lol) . He inserts this tubing and fills bladder with solution and then extracts the wash. He said any inflammation or irritation can result in some atypia....who knew?

So, in 3 months he wants a voided sample and i will be sure to tell hubby, not a first morning urine.

Glad your second test came out " normal". Hubby and I aged a couple years waiting for doc to call.

I had the same problem from my annual physical 2 months ago (my cysto annual is 6 months apart) and the GP panicked. I made an appointment with my URO and he asked "why I am there". He had read the report and since I had already voided a sample he did the cytopathology again and it said showed nothing. He did say an early first of the day void is not a good sample which can give funny samples. This might be both of our experiences.

Sara, uro just called back. He is not concerned. He said it is common for "rare atypical cells" to show after cystoscopy snd bladder washing because of the instrumentation used. More common to see atypia after bladder washings than in voided urine samples. He wants my husband to get a repeat voided urine ( pee in a cup sample) test done in 3 months, but he said he feels confident that with the clear cystoscopy, and no hematuria that all will be fine.

I hope this information may help someone else who gets an "atypical" on their cytology report.

Thanks again for being there last night:) you are an angel.

Thank you Sara. I agree ...don't send an electronic message on a Sunday that could be alarming...with no explanation. According to the date on it, he had the report since Thursday the 28 th. why no one called Thursday or Friday is a bit confusing too. Hopefully, my hubby will reach the doc tomorrow. i'll let you know what he says.

Thanks again. You are a very calming presence.
