After 10 years it\'s CIS

8 years 5 months ago #36220 by Nix
From what I have read here, and my own body's response, BCG washes do get progressively more side effects. I was good to go, (just the usual uncomfortable reactions) until my 18th - 24th BCG treatments.
However, I have been cancer free (CIS) for over three years! I would certainly recommend Dr. Lamm's protocol - reducing the dose after the first 6.My Uro did not follow that, and by the 24th my bladder had enough, and could not even hold the BCG for 5 minutes!
I know you will do well and know we are ALL pulling for you!

Yes, Warren. Unfortunately, as your body becomes sensitised it does become worse. In my case, the first were fairly easy, except for the first six to eight hours. As the treatments went on, both fatigue for several days after and bleeding got worse and worse. A couple of sessions of BCG-induced cystitis delayed treatments for a week several times. By the time I was finished ....AND I DID COMPLETE THE SERIES!!....I was at 1/3 dose.

It was very do-able, if not a lot of fun. But MUCh better than the alternative and MUCH better than the chemo I have seen friends with other types of cancer endure.

Keep up the good work!!

Warren,

Yes, that is usually the case. Initial treatments (USUALLY) have fairly mild reaction and it builds up over time.

Except of course for me! First one had cramping, bleeding, pain, fever. Second one about the same. Third and final: High fever (concern over sepsis) and no more BCG for me. I'm in the minority on this one though.

As you'll see from Jack, Sara Anne, and tons of others here...it is usually not terrible but not something you'd go do if you didn't have to. :)

Hope your BCG treatments go great, it keeps the beast at bay, and that you keep us posted.

Had my first BCG yesterday. I don't seem to be having any reaction so far, although it's maybe a bit hard to tell since my bladder is still a bit irritable from the biopsies. I don't heal too quickly.
So, all you BCG veterans out there: Does the degree of reaction increase as the treatments continue?
