Joeman,

with bladder cancer, low grade, noninvasive is the best you can hope for. BCG is most effective on high grade CIS. You do want to be sure he got good margins on it when he took it out.

He may want to try mitomycin or just keep an eye on it. There is a high rate of recurrence but as long as you keep a close eye on it you should be good.

Do your homework as you said. Knowledge is power.

Joeman,

Be sure to tell your urologist about what happened. If you have his email, send him that article that pat gave you the link to. You can't take any more BCG but mitomycin administered intravesically (same as the BCG) might be an alternative.

Were you in a situation where there were any residual tumors or was the BCG treatment for CIS and/or other bladder tumors that were already removed and the BCG was to try to prevent recurrence? If not CIS, were you high grade or low grade?
BCG is great for CIS but not worth the risk you face with the side effects given what you've already had.

Hi Joeman,
I experienced the very same problems, after my 4th treatment, I woke up one day and my eyes were swollen shut, the next day my left wrist, then both knees ( I could not walk) - went to my uro - and he swore up and down that it was not a side effect - went to a rheumotoglist and he gave me prednisone and it finally cleared up. I have not had any more bcg treatments -but I have had clear check up's since that time. Should the cancer come back - it will be a decision to make at that time. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, the people that you will talk with on this sight are awesome - very knowledgable and very kind. Best of luck to you - Bobbi
