Thanks Mike for the information. My Urologist is suggesting the green light laser treatment. However, he has suggested that we wait as long as possible for any treatment with the excetion of medication. He has me on both Avodart and Urooxathral. I guess that if it wasn't for the meds, I would be in worse shape. However he is also concerned with retention with the bladder cancer. Then over the last year, I have had two slight elevations in my PSA test. Does it ever end? Again, thanks for your response.

Chuck,

I had BPH and cystitis of the prostate. I was scheduled for a TUMT to resolve the problem, but then got side tracked because my bladder cancer came back.

I wound up getting a TUIP during a TURBT but since the biopsies showed muscle invasive bladder cancer, I wound up getting my cystectomy before finding out if the TUIP helped the symptoms at all. It takes a few weeks for a TUIP to show results. A TUMT can take 3-6 months.

Here is some info about BPH and the various treatment options. If your uro doesn't want to do surgery, you may want to consider the TUMT option.

Here's a quote from the site related to the TUMT:
As it says, TUMT is not for everyone. It depends on the size of the prostate but your uro will know.

I remember when I was going to get it, I found a video of a guy in the UK who had the procedure. He was basically laying on the examining table with the back part up and reading a magazine. They do the microwaves for about an hour and then you go home.

Might be worth a try and its less risky than TURP.

Congrats on the clear cysto. I too have my next cysto next Monday (20th). I always get a little apprehensive the week before and by the day of the exam, I’m a nervous wreck. On a side note, does any of the guys also deal with the enlarged prostate problem? Mine seems to be getting progressively worse over the last year. My Urologist says tolerate it as long as possible and then we will talk about the laser surgery. I’ve read that the cure is sometimes worse than the condition. Anyhow, I have to agree with Betty Davis when she stated: “Getting old is not for sissies”.

Hi Joe,
I am actually a few days behind you - I go next Monday and the "butterflies" are alive and well in the pit of my stomach. I have had 22 BCG so far. How many have you had. I always say "if I am lucky enough to have a clear cysto then I will be lucky enough to get BCG - even though I dread the BCG (each time it gets harder for me) I know how lucky I am to have the BCG work so far:)
I have been "clear" since 9/07 - so I am hoping for clear thru the summer:S
Good Luck - I will be thinking of you
