Would anyone refuse BCG treatments?

My husband has had many BCG treatments. His side effects have been very minor. Usually he feels chilly and tired afterwards. He is comfortable enough to sleep the rest of the day away. A few times he has had slight burning for 24 hours while urinating.
I sometimes think the tiredness is more do to not sleeping well the night before from the anticipation of the treatment than it has to do with the BCG itself!
I'll cross my fingers that they are as easy for you as they are for him.

I've had 12 treatments so far, with 3 more coming up in March. While the initial 6 were trouble-free, the side effects did grow on me during the maintenance phase, the worst being reactive Arthritis. So we delayed the 3rd. maint. round by 3 more months for me to recover. I am a bit concerned about what this next round will cause...more arthritis? If my Uro won't dilute the chemical, I'm thinking about reducing the dwell time myself....

Bottom line....You gotta do it, 'cuz to NOT do it isn't an option, in my opinion.

Many thanks to those who responded to my inquiry. I feel a lot more comfortable about agreeing to the BCG therapy and will most likely do it.

I have had one BCG full series and one maintenance series and will have my second maintenance in March. I have complained about a few of the effects of BCG...fatigue and one real bout of diarrhea.. BUT these really ARE minor in the grand scheme of things. I have friends who have been through chemo for other cancers and what most of us have with BCG would make my friends laugh.
BCG is a wonderful thing for us to have available. GO for it.!!

I hope that I won't be the only person to post who has had some bad side effects from BCG. I had Stage T1 G3 multiple tumors and CIS. I was given the choice of BCG or RC. I thought "how will I ever know if it would work on me unless I tried it". So I did, and would do so again. After the 1st 2 treatments I would have pain severe enough that I would take the pain meds after the treatments before the really bad pain hit in order to get it under control. The day after I would be OK. At treatments 5 & 6 my urethra was so swollen they had a very difficult time trying to get the cathetar in. Because of my reaction to BCG my Dr. reduced my "dwell" time - the time of BCG in my bladder - which helped the side effects from becoming more severe. A week after my 6th BCG I experienced a bout of reactive arthritis in my thumb and knee which required the use of a walker. Two days later my leg swelled from toes to groin. My internist sent my for an ultrasound because she thought I had a blood clot (I didn't). Most people don't have symptoms this servere. I think everyone should at least give it a try. I'm not sorry that I did.

I have had 21 BCG Treatments and so far so good. I have had spasms and been very tired for a few days, but I would still do the BCG because it is the best teatment out there and so far it is working. I had Ta CIS, and even though each maintenance series gets a little more involved, I would certainly go with the treatments.
Good Luck,
Nix
