Would anyone refuse BCG treatments?

I have had 3 TURBTs and have had multiple (27) BCG treatments. I will have my final maintenance treatment this Friday. I have had no side effects other than a little pain in the bladder and burning when I urinate. During my early treatments I would be fine the next day. The longer I have been taking the treatments, the longer (3-4days) it has been taking to get back too 100%.
I am now nearly 14 months tumor free. My tumors were Ta Grade 1.
The longer I go being tumor free, the more of a believer I am becoming of BCG treatments.:)

Jack

Not taking the BCG gives somewhere from an 80-90% chance of recurrence according to my uro. Doing BCG changes it almost the other way-roughly 80% of the time it works. Would guess most of us have had "minor" complaints. I basically took just a day off on each treatment. Beats chemo option by a long shot in my opinion.

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.

I had briefly contemplated holding off on BCG that was recommended by my urologist, as I just had one recurrence, two tiny low grade tumors that occurred two years after my initial diagnosis and TURBT (the initial single tumor was the same type). I'd read that BCG was not as effective in low grade tumors as in higher grade tumors and CIS, but decided to proceed after being convinced that just the fact of recurrence was probably enough to warrant the BCG. I had my the initial BCG treatment for 6 weeks back in August-September, have had two all-clear cystocopies since then, and have 3 weeks of maintenance starting this Friday. I'm happy to report no side-effects whatsoever from the first 6 weeks, and am hoping for the same result now.

My urologist uses the same full-strength BCG for maintenance treatments, but reduces the strength if these later treatments cause side effects.

Best of luck! :)

Thanks for replying. It's good to hear that your side effects were minimal.

I had 6 weeks of BCG and had very little side effects. I am hoping to start the maintenance BCG shortly pending results of my most recent cysto. I had an option to not take the treatments based on my initial dx, but chose to do so.

Moira,

For many BCG does not have that many side effects and for those it does reducing the amounts have worked well for them. There are also medications and ways to make the treatments easier if you have problems. There are other agents but none of the choices are not without some potential side effect and BCG is considered generally to be the first line for non invasive blc. The upside to doing BCG or another agent is that they are meant to reduce re-occurrence and progression. We have to keep our eye on the ball here none of us signed up but it is ours now and we have to find a way to get the results we need.

For me I had a little burning following BCG and may have been a little tired after for a few days, far from the fears I had it was not that bad. I have stated before that when dealing with blc there is plan a and that is to do nothing and plan b that is to seek treatment. For me plan a was always scarier than plan b so I went with the treatment. I am sure you will hear from others that have an opinion and I am happy you are here with us. Don’t be ashamed of the fact that this whole thing is overwhelming and terrifying we all have to deal with those feelings but we find that with time and communicating with others dealing with the same issues it does get better. Welcome to the family.
