Vin... there is a Mel brooks movie... I think it was in "History of the World, part 2" and they are at the ballet and they dancer's balls start blowing up like a balloon. Very funny. I'm not 100% sure that is the right movie, but I sure do remember the scene... take care and thanks for the chuckle... ;D rugrat..

In all seriousness though (I just realized that last post may have sounded a bit cranky) thanks for the link Wendy. The more info I have the better.
I really do appreciate the guidance.

Wow. More weird stuff. I can't imagine inflating my penis. I guess the upside is that I could probably get extra large inflation bags installed and go on the road with a comedy act. What a perfect SNL skit.
If it wasn't me I know I'd laugh my ass off at it.
Christ. I think I need meds.

Is there anyone on here with first hand experience they care to share on this topic?

Dear Vin,

From my limited understanding of the lab-grown bladder issue, because the procedure begins with a person's own cells it's too risky to do this with a person who has bladder cancer. There's something known as 'the field effect', which means that once you get bladder cancer the whole lining of the urinary tract from the bladder up to the renal pelvis (part of the kidney where urine collects and then drains out the ureter) is now at risk, and forever at risk. Nasty thought I know.

There's another problem with the arteries that connect to the bladder as well as all the nerves. I had read about lab bladders many years ago, put up pages on the website and sat and waited. Finally had to remove the pages because it was a dead end. Since putting WebCafe up in '99 I have taken down almost as many pages as we've added..because promising things just don't necessarily pan out into practice.

About your other question, I know a good number of men who had good surgeons that performed nerve sparing surgery along with cystectomy. This means they were able to regain erectile function after they healed. It takes some time. There are ways to enhance the process, hydraulic implants-a pump, injections or pills like Viagra and Muse...and it works!

Roni Olsen contributed a 'survival guide' all about fighting impotence after bladder removal:

Take care,
Wendy

Hi,
If you get the December issue of Popular Science and turn to page 101 there is an article entitled The Organ Farmer and the first paragraph reads Anthony Atala makes bladders. Not the plastic-model kind but the actual living, human organs. Step into his office at Wake Forest University's Institute for Regenerative Medicine where the 48 year old tissue engineer is director......and so on. It is an amazing article that all you young ones going through treatments might be interested in reading. Maybe there will be a "real" bladder they can replace your bad one with in the not too distant future.
Keep the faith....Jean

Hi Vin

It is amazing that with all of the medical advances they have........such as a face transplant.......that bladder transplants have not happened. :(

I guess some procedures are more nerve sensitivity saving than others. I would be interested to hear some stories about the S-E-X topic. Vin I commend you for bringing it up. It has popped up (no pun intended) in my mind more than once.

As soon as I start to think of our future sex life (not ours as in you and me ;)) I mean ours as in me and Mr Woodie (as Greg so affectionately refers to Mr Bubbles.)

Then I think I shouldn't be worried about that and I am thinking selfishly. I mean, after all, we are talking about cancer here--life or death--vs. knockin boots in the bedroom.

So would the more experienced members please stand up and fill us in???
If this a TABU subject here please let me know and I will never request info about it again..... :-X

Vin, did you get the book link I sent you via PM? That may have some of these type of questions in there.

I never thought I would be asking for "birds and the bees" advice at age 40....... ::)
