I had 3 puffs of a cig way back in 7th grade...does that count? My mother used to smoke like a chimney and we kids used to blow out her matches to keep the smoke at a minimum...would make her so mad...HA! I've always tried to avoid second hand smoke like the plague, so how did I get so lucky as to come up with this BC stuff? Go figure....

I quit smoking 17 yrs before BC. Right on schedule as Dr Lamm suggests. My Uro told me it does not matter if you quit - the damage to the bladder is done while you are smoking. Of course, it is always better to quit :) My brother was also dx'ed with BC - his was invasive at the time and he has had a neo-bladder for four years. We both grew-up in an industrial town and both smoked + our parents smoked - it would be a miracle if we didn't get BC:S Even though they say it is not genetic-we both had the same environment. So far the BCG is working for me, but of course I can't see the future, hopefully I will be one of the 50% it works for, if not I will get in line for a new bladder.

My husband did smoke for years but quit at least 16 years ago. He also worked around a lot of chemicals.
We even had some records pulled with the types of chemicals but did not have enough information to ever pinpoint that he worked around the ones that do contribute to BC.

Hi again, Lady Jane. Just wrote to you on the other topic!!
I never smoked. My husband did...all the time, and I was constantly exposed to second hand smoke. He died of lung cancer. My doctors feel that second hand smoke IS a factor in the development of my bladder cancer. And a pulmonologist told me that the effects of smoking on cancer development can show up decades after the cessation of smoking. The initial damage to the DNA of the cells can take years to develop into clinical disease.

Jane,
I quite smoking over 12 years ago. My doctors all say that after having quite that long ago it should not have been a factor. Of course I believe it is a factor. The other thing to consider is that almost all cancers are linked to smoking because it is one of the first questions they ask. I do know of people that have bladder cancer that have never smoked. It is my belief that they do not know enough about bladder cancer. Hopefully they will start doing more research soon.
