Both prostate cancer and bladder cancer at the same time

10 years 5 months ago #18847 by paul smith
I've had prostate cancer, 8 weeks of radiation finished Feb 2006, Lupron therapy since. PSA currently less than 0.1.

Bladder cancer discovered about 6 months ago, had a 6 BCG induction treatment, and more recently a 3 BCG maintenance treatment. Will receive a 3 BCG maintenance treatment every 3 months for 2 years.

A side effect of prostate radiation is bladder spasms, which BCG appears to suppress.

The material expressed in urine after BCG treatment was a big surprise, and comforting.

best, paul - 73 years old as of June 2008.

My husband had prostate cancer (died 3 years later of lung ca.)
His urologist told him that it is NOT the absolute PSA number that is the issue, but an increase over time.

Been clear from Bladder cancer over 2 1/2 years had surgery in 9/05. I have had no problems with anything coming back since "Thank God". :)
I started my experience with a 3.5 psa approx one year into my original treatment with 6 bcg's my psa went up to 7.2 and then a re test went to 6.3.
I decided to have a transrectal biopsy 12 core samples and it came up positive with a Gleason score of 6. On 11/06 I had a mapping biopsy and 53 core samples taken NO CANCER sent to two separate labs and both came up with the same results. I decided NOT to have surgery in 8/07 my psa 3.1 in 3/8 my
psa 3.7. I don't know your case but if my psa goes up again I would take a full dose of antibiotics wait a while and have another psa test first before I would submit to another biopsy.

I sure would like to help you, but reading the thread about your need for hormone therapy and radiation, is as tommyt said, rather confusing.
I've had prostate cancer, treated with seed implants and radiation. now into my tenth year and no problems. My pSA is < 0.1
My problem after bladder cancer and surgery via cystoscpic method and BCG wash, is that I have tumors in my ureter and renal pelvis, which I have had removed several times since 2004.
I am very fortunate to have a wonderfully skilled urology specialist. But I have had to be very pro-active in confronting my particular situation. It seems to me that if we sit back and hope for the best, depending on someone else to take care of us that we might miss some early detection along the way, when treatments are most likely to be successful. So I would encourage you to fight back with all your skills, as best that you can. And no one can ever say you didn't try.

I did not intend to admonish you, but i have too many family and friends who expect the medical profession to ride to the rescue.

Poor John Wayne, if he was still with us, he'd know what to do.
