Interferon and BCG-Doctor refused to give

Thanks for your response, I have been under the influence of BCG the last few days and wasn't able to respond, feeling a bit better now.

I guess the real answer to why my doctor didn't feel its important to add interferon, is as Brewster posted.. It’s still in research and doctors usually go with proven remedies.

I still can’t understand why he wouldn’t try it, especially if I failed BCG the first time. It doesn’t seem to be harmful.

Sincerely,
Sol,

Sorry Mystic...didn't mean to slight you...i think i meant it for you both. I merely posted the latest that i've seen...i haven't seen anything recently from O'Donnell. And actually there are a lot of different trials going on out there that are in various phases...at Memorial I know Dr. Herr was placing Cysplatin directly into the bladder..don't know the phase but suspect its a 11......And theres a study with Abraxane a breast cancer drug that looks promising for those who have failed BCG...www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/98675.php..........And this in Urololgy issue of February with yet another approach......www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/98675.php
So take your pick...show them to your doctor or whatever.

Sol - the answer to why not that is usually given is that the BCG + IFN is still in research and not proven. I don't buy that considering it's in a Phase III trial with 1200 subjects and favorable interim reports. There are plenty of uros out there who think using it vs. straight bcg is a no-brainer and that it will one day be the new gold standard to replace bcg. I could see a uro saying go for the rc and forget further treatment, but I can't see continuing with straight bcg when it obviously hasn't worked. Have you listened to Dr. O'Donnell's interview and followed the links into his work? see home page of this site. brewster

"Interferon alpha or gamma has been used in the treatment of stages Ta, T1 and CIS urothelial carcinoma, either as a single agent therapy or in combination with BCG. Its role has primarily been in post-BCG failure with early promising results. Although BCG with interferon has shown a 42% response with tolerable side effects after BCG failure, no evidence has indicated that re-treating with BCG with interferon is superior to re-treating with BCG alone."
