The purpose of self catheterization is to keep the stricture open. It would be, at most, once a day, and not for every urination. I know that self catheterization is a treatment option. Let's see what happens. So far it hurts a little to urinate after yesterdays instrumentation, but I'm not experiencing any bladder symptoms. I worked all morning seeng pateints without a pee break. After the stricture is opened surgically I'll have to find out what my urologist found and what he recommends. I'm actually, surprisingly calm at the moment. When I first got cancer, being instrumented and catheterized was a big deal. Now, 7 years later, it's just what has to be done. After the last dilation I went back to work that evening with the catheter in.

Warren,

Do you think you may have to catherize every time?

This recent experience sounds horrible!!

You've really been through it with this stricture.

Thanks everybody, for your interest in my situation. The procedure planned does not involve a urethroplasty. It will be an internal urethrotomy performed through a rigid cystoscope. I've had that before as well as a laser treatment. What surprises me is that in both instances the urologist did not keep me catheterized afterward. My current urologist kept me catheterized after the last dilation and will certainly do so after the urethrotomy. Unfortunately, strictures have a high recurrence rate in spite of treatment, so the question is, what next? My guess is daily self catheterization for the rest of my life to keep the stricture open. :P
At least I'm not miserable like the last 2 times my stricture flared up, so I just hope to make it to the procedure without any real trouble. And, just knowing my urologist couldn't even get the smallest sound through the stricture has me a little freaked. :-X

Warren,

I was cringing when I read your post, and I'm a woman, with no stricture! Not good when both patient and doctor are sweating, for sure. Will your operative procedure take care of the stricture once and for all? I hope so.

Best wishes on the next procedure -- there's always that next one to look forward to. :P
