Lauren,

I agree with the others here in letting your urologist do the BCG or Mitomycin therapy. Did your Uro state why he/she is waiting for the third re-occurrence before starting some type of therapy? Although going through the therapy is no fun, the potential for ending the re-occurrences; in my opinion, would out-weigh the potential side-effects. At least in my case I am gambling on the odds that I can win at the merry-go-round of re-occurrence. I started my eight week of Mitomycin C therapy this week. But the news that your tumor was RaG1 is great news. Good luck and keep us informed.

I agree - my urologist referred me to a MD Anderson-trained oncologist for bcg, but after my consultation, he sent me back to the urologist for the bcg treatments - he told me that my type of treatment was usually done by a urologist. He and my urologist discussed how to set up the treatments at a local hospital so they did not have to be done in the urologist's small office.

If it were you, and you had a second recurrence, and your doctor was a urologist, a board-certified surgeon, but not an oncologist, would you rather have your BCG/chemo treatments from an oncologist, or would you stay with the urologist?

If you wanted another opinion, especially if there was an issue of other treatments such as oral or intravenous chemo, or radiation, you would consult an oncologist. Intravessicle treatment with either Mitomycin C or BCG is routinely done by urologists. There'd be no reason to go an oncologist just for these intravessicle treatments.

Well in my opinion, and my doc is the same a Urologist and a board certified surgeon. I also have low grade stage 1 noninvasive and I am staying with him to do my BCG or mitomycin therapy if and when that time comes. It seems that if your doc is doing what is right and you are comfortable with him then I think you have to do what you feel is right for you. Just my opinion. Barb

No, I didn't have anything during the intial TURB, nor this time...

So, now I'll start a new subject: If it were you, and you had a second recurrence, and your doctor was a urologist, a board-certified surgeon, but not an oncologist, would you rather have your BCG/chemo treatments from an oncologist, or would you stay with the urologist? You have no reasons for leaving the urologist, you are happy with your care, but would you feel better moving forward in the Bladder Cancer Odyssey with an oncologist instead? (tumors are TaG1)..

Your opinions??
