Warren,
Thanks so much for the advice about getting a culture. I'll as the urologist for one when I see him next week. It's great to have a doctor on board! Just sorry about the circumstances that brought you here, as well as all the members. Hope all is going well.

Dear Linda,
Since it's a simple enough test, you should have a urine culture done to check for infection - and I mean CULTURE, not urinalysis. If you have an infection it would be best to start treatment for the infection before the cystoscopy. Regardless of the outcome of the culture, and even if your symptoms resolve, you must proceed with the cystocopy since you are overdue for it.

Thanks for your reply. The insurance situation is that I have been turned down by every insurance company because of my health history which includes not only bladder cancer but a ruptured brain aneurysm the year before the cancer.

I'm not sure about this urologist as I have not met him yet. There are not a lot to choose from in this part of Utah I moved to from California. I did have a lot of confidence in my last urologist in California that I saw for 8 years. He always ran a cytology test, but even the cytology they did when I had the 5 cm tumor was negative so I have never depended on that.

I'll definitely post if I ever find an answer about this pain at the end of urination. Interestingly, after getting out of bed and urinating it doesn't happen, just after being upright for a while. Perhaps a tumor on a stalk that floats down to the urethral opening? It will be nice to get an answer.

Thanks, Rosemary for your comments and everything you do on this great forum! I hope your cystoscopy results are good on 1/15!

I appreciate your input. I question everything when it comes to medical care and I'd never let it rest as a bladder infection when I'm so overdue for a cystoscopy. I know this can happen though. Interestingly when I first had symptoms I suddenly had bloody urine with huge clots. They put me on Cipro or some antibiotic and the blood completely cleared. The nurse practitioner and consulting urologist insisted on an ultrasound which showed a 5 cm tumor, so very greatful they were thorough!

I hope you are doing well.

Linda,

I am so glad that you are finally able to have the cystoscopy. It is a terrible position for you to need medical care and to be without insurance. We certainly need a better system to provide for people such as yourself. You are certainly not alone either!!

I sometimes have pain at the end of urination. I have not noticed any blood, but there is sometimes burning also. I am attributing this problem (it comes and goes) to a vaginal infection that has been hanging around since my last BCG treatment 8 months ago. I also have a cystoscopy scheduled on January 15th.

Are you confident with the Urologist that you will be seeing? I hope that he will be very thorough with you. If it were me, I might even ask him to do a cytology to test for cancer cells in the urine, just in case he didn't think of it.

Please keep us posted as to how the cystoscopy turns out, and if you find an answer about the pain at the end of urination, please let me know.

Your new pal,
Rosemary

Dear Linda

There are many things that could be causing your pain. Blood in the urine and burning during(or at the end of) urination are signs that something is not right. It could be stones, infection, and as you already know it could be cancer. If you were to ask this same question to a good urologist i would think he would tell you that the only sure way to know is to do a cystoscopy. I had a urologist(not a good one) put me on 30 days of cipro and he did not do a cystoscopy as he should have. I know i have not really answered your question but just wanted to mention for you to make sure the doctor does a cystoscopy and not send you home with cipro. I know it is hard but try to relax and enjoy the weekend. Hopefully next week the doctor can give you the answer to this and all his news will be good news :)
