Judy,

You two are getting two of the drugs used in my three drug cocktail. The key I found was being proactive with the nausea meds taking them before you need them. Once the nausea started it was harder to control than if you just assumed it was going to happen and treated beforehand. Of course I am not a doctor and you should take medications as prescribed.

We were about three hours from Boston and we would go down the evening before and stay in a hotel close by as we would start chemo early in the morning it took about five hours and then we would head back home that day.

I was also on the exact schedule you are on and found that I was fine starting out but as time wore on I became more tired and worn down. In other words you will find it to be cumulative but once you stop it is amazing how soon you start to return to normal.

I guess the one piece of advice I would give anyone doing any chemo is to stay on top of any physical symptoms as something as simple as a cold can become a big deal quickly. I remember a simple cough becoming a big deal in less than 24hrs. so if you don’t feel well don’t wait let your healthcare team know. Make sure you have a number or email to ask questions quickly if you need to.

You are right you two are a team I have often noted when I got cancer in a way my husband and family did as well. I give thanks everyday for having the support and love of my team mate and I am sure your husband does also.

Good luck and please keep us updated we are here if you need us.

Thanks to all of your suggestions, my husband consulted an oncologist who specializes in bladder and prostate cancers at Duke Medical Center. This doctor was quite caring and so we are beginning chemo on Wednesday. I say 'we' because after 47 years together, we have become a unit.

The chemo will consist of four cycles, each cycle being cisplatin and gemcitabine on day 1, gemcitabine on day 8, then the week of rest. We came home with four different prescriptions to counter the side effects, one to be taken prior to the dose.

As it turns out, it is only a three-hour drive to Durham, North Carolina, from our home, so we can probably do everything in just a day without the need for an overnight.

Now I would like to know what he can expect from the chemo, and if there anyone has any suggestions about coping with it. Thanks so much.
Judy
