Information on a Clinical Trial

Hi Karen,

Has there been no mention yet about bisphosphonates like Zometa for the bone mets? This is in trials for solid tumors, maybe even becoming standard by now...Zometa or Aridia, to slow down bone mets. Not a chemo, though not without some side effects.

Has your doctor given any tips for clinical trials?

Hi Wendy,

My husbands mets are in the bone. The thing I find strange is he has only one tumor about the size of a marble in a lymph node in his pelvis. The Bladder tumor has not grown back after his TUR when they "Scraped" it for Pathology. He has no problems with his bladder AT ALL! (Weird with Bladder Cancer) He does have Lesions on his pelvis, sacrum, 10th rib on both sides. It was in the collar bone and shoulder as well but the Radiation got those. All of his other organs are clear except for 2 nodules in his left lung that are not pathological. He is relatively pain free...he is exhausted after the Chemo, and Radiation Treatments, and his kidney function is 1.9. They want to try to get it back to a 1.3 or so if possible so he can continue Chemo. If they cannot get the numbers down, there are few options left besides more palliative radiation. If you have any information on ANY Trials going on that are better than Phase I...I would love the info.

Thanks for everything Wendy,
Karen

Dear Karen,

It's interesting, yes. But it's a phase I trial. It is surely in the interest of science to participate in phase I trials but then again...the doses are still being investigated, and they are not going to know what the optimal dose actually is yet.

I re-read our pages about trials blcwebcafe.org/clinicaltrials.asp (and there are good links to bigger and better info as well as links to trial sites). I went to the NCI and was browsing and noticed they are now in phase II of trying Tamoxifen on stage IV blc. A breast cancer treatment (one I had myself). At least there is some previous data to ask about, because it's been around for a while and is in the second phase. Would that be an interesting option to inquire about?

Forgive me for asking but would you remind me of what treatments your husband's had and where the mets are, is there anything pre-cluding him from trying any trial out there?

Take care,
Wendy

Aimeth, Susan, Holly, & their respective spouses, and all others looking for something positive with the disease we are facing.

Well we had our meeting with Dr. Petty. He is conducting a Phase I Clinical Trial using a drug that was originally used on Pregnant Women who had high blood pressure. It has shown so far to slow down, stop, or shrink the growth of solid tumors. This Clinical Trial is a bit different than others I have investigated in that there will not be a placebo, and virtually no side effect seen thus far.

There is really no other information to give...Remember with a Clinical Trial you cannot be receiving Chemo or Radiation...

I will let you know more as I find out more.

If anyone else hears of something that looks promising please let us know...

Thinking of you all,
Karen
