Good morning.
Yes, they did find infection present, and he is on a 7 day course of antibiotics. But an infection wouldnt caise the reactive urothileal cells. He is scheduled for cytoscopy. SaraAnn's response helped us all relax we will wait and see what that turns up, hopefully nothing. I feel for him, he's been through so much over the last several months, and It seems he just can't quite completely recover and get a normal urine flow back since the TURP surgery. The cells really gave us all a good scare. The possibility of hearing that word in one of my moved ones is an awful feeling. Hope all of you here get better and never have to deal with cancer again.

I will add to what Sara Anne said for more peace of mind. I have no idea what "reactive urothileal cells present" mean however, the no malignancy is the good news. The "post operative urine retention" or POUR, is common after surgery as the bladder (sometimes the colon) go to sleep. I had that after my last surgery, a carotoid artery in my neck requiring a catheter for 5 days. The perplexing thing is your brother is past that. Which leads me thinking it is possible there is an infection (UTI) present? Just a thought as we are not doctors.

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.

It means exactly what it says. No malignant cells were present. It is important to note that urine cytology is not definitive for cancer; however, these tests seem to err most often giving false positives, indicating the presence of cancer when it is not there. These tests can only be considered preliminary, but this is good news. Urothelial cells are cells from the bladder surface and would be expected.

His urologist may do a cystoscopy exam where he looks at the bladder with a small camera. If it looks normal that will be it. If he sees anything abnormal he will suggest further tests. But so far it is a good report.

Hello,
I am here because my brother has just been given his lab results and it says that he has reactive urothileal cells present in his urine, but no malignancies. We have a very heavy family history of cancer, so this has us all very scared. What does this mean? It's going to be over a week before he goes to see the urologist and this is torture having to wait. If anyone can please give us some information about this I would be very grateful. If this does mean bladder cancer, what should we expect from his doctors? I think I should mention that he recently had a turp procedure done, following a bilateral hernia operation. He developed urinary retention and was catheterized for several weeks. After TURP he was fine , until recently he began having trouble voiding, and went to his pysician, and they ran a cytology on his urine. I am giving you what it reads below. I thank you in advance for any information you can give me.

This is exactly what his lab report say's:
NEGATIVE FOR MALIGNANT CELLS
REACTIVE UROTHELIAL CELLS ARE PRESENT
