I finished my six BCG treatments a few weeks ago and I too had no side effects or discomfort. I did have minor bleeding after the last two, but it didn't hurt or anything and it was gone after the first voiding after the two hour wait. And I too wondered if my lack of side effects meant that the BCG wasn't working. I thought that maybe they didn't refrigerate it correctly, although I had no evidence to support that fear. On each visit my doc asked me how I handled the last round and I always said no problems and he would just say good. So I stopped worrying. I hope the BCG worked and I hope that I get to have more rounds (because that will mean the cancer has not returned) and I hope I keep not having side effects.

08/16/16 - TURBT - 1 tumor, T1HG, 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 1.8 cm, non-invasive papillary.
BCG treatments (15 doses total - last March, 2018). As of latest cysto, As of May 4, 2023 - cancer free!

Dear Karnak,

Patience is a must. Add to that no two BC journeys will be alike. From some readings, I thought my husband (also CIS) would be bedridden for days after his BCG treatments with extreme fatigue and other symptoms.

After each treatment, he experienced burning when voiding for about 24 hours. Once during the 3 maintenance BCG cycles, he had a slight temperature overnight with some visible blood/blood clots.

The biopsy after the first 6 BCG's was benign and he had a scope exam after the 3 maintenance BCG's. Something's there and a follow up biopsy is scheduled for 01-06-16.

So, yes, patience is a must.

Husband's journey:
01/2015 1st cystoscopy
03&04/2015 TURBTs-CIS
07/2015 Finished BCGx6
08/2015 biopsy-BENIGN!
10/2015 Finished BCGx3
12/2015 Cysto, redness
01/2016 TURBT, Benign
04/2016 Cysto
05/2016 Finished BCGx3
07&11/2016 Cysto's
1/2017 Finished BCGx3
2/2017 Cysto, redness
3/2017 TURBT, Cysto due 9/2017

Hi my name is Tommy Ferreira (now 69) from South Africa. I went to see a neurologist, Dr F Boezaart, on the morning of 10 Oct 2012 at the Pretoria Urology Hospital and that afternoon he did a turbt and removed a 3cm T1 high grade aggressive tumour and then a dose of mitomycin-C the next morning. During the following 10 months or so I had recurrences and was in the operating theater about every 6 weeks (sometimes 3 weeks). During this time I was often on 6 weekly BCG treatments and finally after about 10 months I was declared to be in remission.
Since then I have been in theater for uretheroscopy examinations every 3 months and it is now 2 years and 3 months that I am in remission.
After each procedure or completion of a BCG course my Urologist would see me, discuss my position/condition and show me photographs of the inside of my bladder. He is always honest and straightforward.
In the beginning I felt bad about asking him about me going to see an oncologist urologist to which he replied that he and the other 15 urologists at the hospital were qualified as such and that I was welcome to see any of them or to go somewhere else for another opinion. He added that 80% of the patients at their hospital were cancer patients. Needless to say I did not go to anyone else as I have the fullest confidence in him.
After each BCG treatment I would have pain when urinating for a few days and often felt as though I had a serious hangover.
My advice to you is don't be embarrassed, ask and discuss with your dr whatever bothers you and feel free to ask for a second or third opinion.
Strongs for the future and count your blessings. Kind regards, Tommy

CIS non-invasive high grade tumor.
I have had no reaction or any discomfort from 6 weeks of BCG. Can the treatments be working in spite of this? My Doc provided nothing but vague and generalized answers to my questions. In 6 weeks I will have 3 weekly treatments, preceded by another cystoscopy. I guess patience may be the answer.
