I'm late to this discussion, but 3/4 months out of surgery doesn't seem like that much to me. Continence comes slow and is never 100% in my experience. I had a neobladder surgery 11/07. I still have mucos and still have occasional leakage at night. I sleep light and get up every 3 or 4 hours as my body now reconizes the feeling of having to pee. I live with the very occasional leakage. No one asked, but my sexual function is now normal, though it took a good 6 or more months to get 100% that way. I think exercisea can help and I did get bio-feeback from my urologist and a PT soon after my surgery.

I think you are right. Although my age was not discused I am almost 70. Whatever the route to "Cancer Free" it is worth it!

I'm 70, retired heat/air contractor. After 4 months of keymo ileal conduit (IC) surgery removed bladder & prostate May 2010

Hang in there Red. It does take time and exercises.

One thing to consider at this point is the condom catheter. You hook it up to a night bag and if you leak in the night you don't get wet. Still set your alarm to get up, just pull the hose off the catheter, go like you normally do, then plug it back in when you get back in bed.

If lack of sleep is a big issue from having to wake up to empty, then you might even try not setting your alarm for one night and just sleep through the night. Talk to your doctor about that first though.

I never did get night time continence so I wear a condom catheter every night. I sleep through the night every night which is certainly nice but I wouldn't have done it if I hadn't given up on the idea of getting to night time continence. Not all of us achieve that with the neobladder but high 80's to low 90's percentage do.

The reason for my cautions is that it can be so tempting to just wear and get great sleep every night that it would set people back in their night time continence training.

Not necessarily slanted--depends on your situation and factors that you or I may not see the significance of, such as current health, age, etc. My doctor refuses to do a neo bladder on anyone over 65, says it is too hard on them. This has certainly been no walk in the park. Three months out and I'm still having issues.

"The club no one wanted to join"-absolutely!
I got a hardcore (slanted) presentation from the hospital Chief Surgeon. I assumed either he was more comfortable with the stoma conduit procedure or perhaps my insurance company liked it (cheaper?). I surfed the net but got confused and depressed so went with his preferred option. As I become more comfortable with the challenge the bag presents my mental attitude improves also.

We're all part of the club no one wanted to join. Why did you opt for the conduit?
