Leigh,

Be careful in the hospital when they put the foley catheter in. Be sure they are checking it FREQUENTLY to be absolutely sure that the mucous isn't causing a blockage of the catheter.

You may have seen my info about this in a different thread that I described from my recent surgery to fix 3 hernias I had along my original incision line and to remove the stapled portion of my intestine (that had also kinked).

Not sure what sizes foley catheters come in, but given my experience I would suggest requesting a LARGE one that would reduce the chance of being blocked by mucous of the neobladder.

Best of luck and hope to hear from you soon!

Mike

Leigh,

I actually order the 18 inch extension hose to connect to the end of the cath bag hose. I use no straps to secure the hoses or bag. With the extra hose length, I just toss the bag on the floor.

Not having cats, I have no worries about something poking holes in the bag. They do have glass bottles you can use instead of a cath bag if you expect that to be a problem.

I do not use the condom catheters that require the strap to help hold it on because I think there is a risk of cutting off blood flow if that is too tight and by having the kind with the extra adhesive, it just seems better.

Rinse the bag out each day. They say to rinse it with vinegar once a week but I don't bother. I just toss the cath bag every month and get a new one.

Hey Mike,

Have done a little research now on the convene, condom catheter and feel ready to give it a bash.

Still waiting for the brochure to choose best option for me.

Apparently I can order three tester boxes for a trial with 5 in each including bag and tubing.

How many straps do you recommend for securing tubing and bag and should I order a cover for bag. I have a few cats roaming the house at night and can imagine this could become a new scratch toy lol.

They can deliver within 24 hours so soooooo looking forward to getting a full night sleep for the first time in over two years since RC.

Leigh :-)

Leigh,

Do a search for: Rochester WIDE Band™ 100% Silicone External Catheter.

The "Wide" is that it has more adhesive which prevents it slipping or leaking.

I have no clue how to advise you on size to order. Medium is 29mm. Small is smaller than that (I think 25mm) and there are various sizes larger (32, 36, 41mm).

I'd suggest you order a week's supply of a couple sizes and then use the ones that fit best. I bought a couple sizes and now I just buy a box of 100 each time.

Don't forget to buy a catheter bag to hook it up to.

Best of luck. Your last post sounded a lot more promising!

Mike

PS: Be absolutely sure that you alert EVERYBODY to your neobladder and that frequent monitoring of your foley catheter is required. If you run into a problem, then just use the condom catheter for your time there. What I did was straight cath myself during the day while in hospital and I put on my condom catheter at night.

Hello Forum,

Calling fellow condon catheter users for tips...

At the moment I am being prescribed dexamethasone to relief the pressure in my head before surgery.

Unfortunately this has reverted me back to incontinent in the evenings when I sleep.

It basically feels like I am in training again for my neo bladder.

I want to order some night time condom catheters and have been posted a form which should arrive today with sizes and choices available.

My care provider would not send tests packs as they have so many and first need to get a guide of size and sort required before they send out any testers.

Mike I think you use these from time too time right? any ideas tips thoughts would be welcome.

I am waking wet every few hours at night and this adds to the hardship of tiredness I have along with the constant bed changing.

Luckily I have sets of matress protectors which can be changed and extra absorbent mats to lie on but they always move around and feels sweaty to sleep on.

The condom catherter will be the best option for now so that I can get a good night sleep and have less washing.

I guess when I am in hospital next week for my head op they will insert a regular catherter until I can walk around again. It was good to read the recent post about ensuring the nursing staff are aware to check for out flow and back flush if required.

It will be the first thing I will talk about with them when I go for my pre- tests next week to make sure they are aware about the tendancy of the neo to produce mucus and block tubes....

Thanks for any info...

Kind Regards
Leigh
