hi patty- i just read your story and replies this morning. PLEASE PLEASE do daily updates. my husband's RC is with doctor schoenberg at hopkins on nov. 5th, so i want to hear every single word. i asked the scheduling office for a private room and was told it was no problem. i asked how much extra it was and they said $5 or $10 extra. i'm sure that's not right but i didn't argue. i called one of the patients on schoenberg's list and he said it was about $250 a day more for a private room but if you could afford it to ABSOLUTELY get it. so i will keep asking/demanding.
anyway, i emailed schoenberg once to ask him the length of the surgery and he said 3-4 hours, and that's why our husbands are going to him - he's one of the best. as far as the shawl - go to bed bath and beyond and get one of those fleece throws for about $10 - i don't think you'll want to keep any of the surgery stuff when it's all over and behind you. you definitely won't want a robe or anything requiring movement to put it on - he will have lots of tubes. i am bringing one of those zero-gravity reliners - they sold them over the summer at bed bath and beyond - it's an outdoor chaise lounge. i actually have the version from the frontage catalog - it was expensive but it's way lighter than the BB and B version. maybe you have a friend who has one and you can borrow it. i also asked at hopkins about getting a private nurse and they said it's now allowed because they have special urology nurses - 1 for every 2-3 patients - and a private nurse that you would hire would not be allowed to touch your husband. so i feel quite comfortable with the amount of care my husband will receive. i am staying at the sheraton on the harbor - it's $184 a night for hopkins patients - normally costs $329, so it's a great discount. parking is $20 a day with in-and-out privileges.
anyway, my husband has one more gemzar treatment tomorrow, and then we're done with that chemo. he played 18 holes of golf yesterday, then hit some tennis balls with a friend afterwards. today he's playing tennis in the morning, then another 18 holes this afternoon. trying to get in all the fun before the shit hits the fan in two weeks. he was quite lucky with the chemo so far - didn't lose any hair, which certainly makes you feel better - at least when you walk down the street everyone doesn't immediately know that you have cancer when they look at you. 14 days till surgery - i can't wait and my husband wants to run away. i bet you have the same situation in your house. please keep in touch - i check this site multiple times per day.
