Patty,
I had the great idea of buying a nice robe for my hospital stay....I NEVER got to use it because they had an IV set up in each of my arms, and even one attached to the side of my neck... and so it was impossible to wear anything but that hospital gown and robe...as someone else said, it has those openings with snaps ...so they can work around all the equipment they have us patients connected to...as for a shawl....well, my hospital was warm enough I never felt I needed anything extra over the robe...yeah, they are ugly but frankly at that stage, who cares, and when I needed to go for scans in the wheelchair, they were always good about providing extra (heated) blankets. And pants...it was three weeks after surgery that I could finally wear pants again and feel good about it.
I feel you will get a private room if you push hard for it and can afford it...where I was, all RC patients had private rooms...the Urology
Floor was so full that they actually had to leave me in ICU for an extra day because a room wasn't available...but I didn't have my spouse with me so I rather appreciated the extra attention in ICU. I had some concerns about how well my nursing needs would be met since I had no one staying with me during the nights and had heard nurses are overworked but I was well taken care of. As for how long the surgery takes...that seems to vary depending on doctor, procedure, hospital and what they find when they actually go in to do the surgery...when I asked my doctor how long it would take, he responded, "it takes as long as I need to it to take" which I felt was a good answer. I know you are drawing near to that timeframe and I am praying for peace of mind for both you and Wayne...and will be praying for you for the days and weeks ahead. Take care. Melodie
