Yeah Pats right, I bought Gene a robe, not enough room for all the stuff, so I hung it in the room so he looked to be GQ like. Until day 3 or 4, then its possible, but a pain really. Get that private room, it is the best. We don't have good luck getting room mates who are human..!! Ginger

That's just what they told me when we did post-op yesterday? She said we are not guaranteed to get a private room? But don't worry, I will push for one! I will save the robe I bought for Wayne for home or I will wear it while I am watching over him! Thank you guys for all the support. I will keep you posted.

I find it hard to believe that Johns Hopkins doesn't have any private rooms...ask for one...it probably wouldn't cost you anymore than if you had to stay in a hotel. At least thats what we found out..our insurance didn't cover that cost but they wouldn't have covered a hotel either. And i'm not surprised that Dr. Schoenberg has this surgery down to 3 l/2 hrs...he's one of the masters at neo's.
As for the robe...he'll be connected to so many iv's..tubes coming out of him...he'd never be able to get it on...and on his legs will be cuffs to keep circulation going so save the pants til he goes home. Actually the gowns have gotten better so that the backside isn't exposed anymore....aaah the advances of modern technology!
I wish you a speedy and successful surgery. You're in most capable hands.

Patty,

I had the great idea of buying a nice robe for my hospital stay....I NEVER got to use it because they had an IV set up in each of my arms, and even one attached to the side of my neck... and so it was impossible to wear anything but that hospital gown and robe...as someone else said, it has those openings with snaps ...so they can work around all the equipment they have us patients connected to...as for a shawl....well, my hospital was warm enough I never felt I needed anything extra over the robe...yeah, they are ugly but frankly at that stage, who cares, and when I needed to go for scans in the wheelchair, they were always good about providing extra (heated) blankets. And pants...it was three weeks after surgery that I could finally wear pants again and feel good about it.

I feel you will get a private room if you push hard for it and can afford it...where I was, all RC patients had private rooms...the Urology
Floor was so full that they actually had to leave me in ICU for an extra day because a room wasn't available...but I didn't have my spouse with me so I rather appreciated the extra attention in ICU. I had some concerns about how well my nursing needs would be met since I had no one staying with me during the nights and had heard nurses are overworked but I was well taken care of. As for how long the surgery takes...that seems to vary depending on doctor, procedure, hospital and what they find when they actually go in to do the surgery...when I asked my doctor how long it would take, he responded, "it takes as long as I need to it to take" which I felt was a good answer. I know you are drawing near to that timeframe and I am praying for peace of mind for both you and Wayne...and will be praying for you for the days and weeks ahead. Take care. Melodie

Thanks!

I am very good at being demanding, when it comes to the people I love. I went through Lung Cancer with my Aunt and I learned very quickly, that you have to stay on top of things yourself. I slept in a recliner in the room with my Aunt and I stayed on everyone to make sure she was taken care of properly.

I have all of Wayne's toiletries already packed.

Of course, I may get to the hospital with all the stuff and turn around and not be able to find Wayne?...........ha ha

Please pray for him you guys! I will keep you posted. Patty

Patty,
If you want a private room call the hospital, scheduling and tell them, don't let them tell you, they are there for the taking, try the nurse who set up your surgery, tell her, then in recovery tell them to check for a private room, keep at it and you'll get it. And tell them you want a recliner in his room, they cannot tell you that you can't stay in his room, I haven't yet heard of it not being the case. Be demanding, and then they won't mess with you. You deserve your privacy,
Ginger
