Pat,
My spouse says the cathers I received are latex and that the sticky substance on this is like a lubricant.....I washed the one I tried and although it was sticky while wet, when it dried, it was no longer sticky. Maye those kind come with their own lube for the first usage. Thanks for the tip on the ones you are using; I will call for a sample....the reason I was using the coude tip is because that is what my hospital set me up with. Yes, I did realize the apple juice would perhaps be too acidic...and I did read the list earlier....I usually drink cranberry once a day and take one capsule of concentrate.

Oh, and since I got the attention of Dr. Wright via email, I did mention to him the webcafe and how valuable a reasource it is to patients, and that I felt his hospital ought to be sharing that web address...looking forward to his comments in regard to that suggestion. Melodie

Melodie i don't have the coude tip...i think thats more for the men....Mine is a clear non-latex Self-Cath Soft..14 French...Ref 114...by the way they have a toll free number to call 1 800 328 3863. Its quite soft and has no guide lines nor is it sticky.
Green tea has caffeine in it and is a kind of diuretic if you didn't know. You can buy de-caf green tea however.
I have the same problem with even non-latex bandaids or tape...i have to keep rotating them around..and i put on cortaid at night on the irritated areas.
Oh and the apple juice falls into the alkaline category believe it or not which was a cause of your crystals so i'd maybe switch over to cranberry , Pom , unless thats to tart for you. Did you check out that list of alkaline and acidic foods ?

Joe & Pat,

I was interesting to read your comments. Yes, those pads look very good and I shall order some. I usually put a folded piece of gauze on Ms. Rose Bud and use tape to hold that on...and it seems no matter which tape I use, a rash develops.

Joe, I think I am more like you and have a tendency to drink more fluids. And like you, I had a similiar experience...one night I missed my 3 hr. alarm and about 30 minutes later woke up and found I was emptying 700 ccs...and I wasn't all that uncomfortable nor was I leaking. Go figure. So I know Rose Bud has possibilities.

As for diet. Well, I'm so worried about leaking that I have limited myself to a very boring diet...and eat very little...have lost 15 pounds since leaving the hospital. A few eggs, cereal, an occasional sandwich, salads, fruit and no coffee or sweets...green tea....no caffine drinks...did try some chocolate but that didn't seem to make any difference. Most days I don't eat more than twice nor very much but I can afford the weight loss. Maybe I will keep a diary anyway and see what that reveals. What I do notice is, if I am very vigilant about checking Rose Bud and notice she has mucus on her, and replace her bandage with a clean one, then she is less likely to leak. What some stomas will do to get attention! Honestly.

In regard to drinking...even when not drinking much, it seems I have quite the output...today's output went as follows: 7 a.m.=130; 9:30=140; 11:15=110; 2p.m.=350; 3:30 p.m.=400; 4:45=300; and so within 10 hours I drank a cup of green tea, a cup of decaf; 10 oz of apple juice & maybe 10 oz. of water...total possibly 40 oz of liquids taken in = total output 1430.

Oh, Pat, since we had talked earlier of clear catheters, I did try to purchase one from the medical supply company closest to my home but they said they couldn't sell me one without a prescription. What they did do was give me a phone number for Mentor out of Minneapolis and so I contacted them....very surprised today when I received my package...thought I would be getting 2 or 3 and instead have 24. I did give one a try and it worked but they are definitely harder material than the one I was using...it does have the coude tip with a guide stripe although I'm not sure what the guide stripe is about. I'm thinking it is made of plastic. What I don't like about it most of all is that it has a sticky kind of feel about it, when new out of package and even after washing it.

Anyway, thanks for the comments. I appreciate being back on the forum. Melode

Well Pat I quit drinking and I do miss my beer it's been over 3 yrs now but damn that was bad enuff with my real bladder I sure in the hell could not imagine drinking and having to cath and when you get sh@tface that must be a blast. That was his prob then he probably would not cath Mr. Alcohol takes over then and says you'll be ok. Guess if you can a have a couple it's ok but I was never that kind of drinker lol. Joe ;)
