Gosh
Thats a toughy I am only one year post surgery and my cancer was more advanced than your husbands.I dont regret the surgery at all I regret ever having the disease but am pleased that I had a cystectomy. The surgery is traumatic and the recovery is hard but it is copeable with and I liked the idea that they had taken the cancer away.
I would discuss chemotherapy and radiotherapy first and get second /third opinions you can only have your bladder removed once.
Having said that if it was a choice between surgery and chemotherapy I would go for the surgery route everytime.

The urologist told us my husband had stage T1, or maybe T2, grade 3 bladder cancer after removing 2 tumors by TUBT 6/22/07. We went for a second opinion to MD Anderson Cancer Institute and the second opinion was stage T1, grade 3, very aggressive, invasive cancer, not thru the bladder wall but into the lamina propria. The doctor recommended bladder/protrate/lympth node removal. He said due to the aggressive nature of the cancer that BCG treatment would not go deep enough to kill the roots/cancer. Only 20% cure rate, too much of a chance it will break thru the wall. My 66 yr old husband has had 2 heart attacks, low injection fraction and this is a 6-7 hour surgery. Are there any other good options? Or do we just need to go with the operation? He is wondering what radical cystectomy survivaors would say after 3-5 years. Did you make the right decision?
