Gotcha, Pat. Thanks for the advice. I have bananas in the hotel room, so I can bring him more. And I have a lactose intolerance, so I can certainly understand about the dairy. I didn't even know that I had it....didn't put 2 and 2 together until our son had colic, and then I realized that the reason I always got bloated after milk was the lactose thing. Now I carry the lactaid, and I'm fine.

And hard boiled eggs....i have some of those, too. I had made a dozen for the stay here, but a couple froze in the hotel fridge, and I ran short, but luckily HyVee had some more. I'll share with him.

I just can't wait to get home and have some real oatmeal with honey and chopped walnuts and pecans.

Again, thanks all.

I will tell you one thing that is really good for him and they are giving it to him in the hospital is the banana.....its high in postassium...fills you up...and is a great digestional aid. A lot of people react to fresh fruit.(not bananas tho)....mine happened to be dairy.....i really did suffer through those hot fudge sundaes....I really do think everyone is different in how they react after this surgery.....i wish there was a norm. I personally made sure i had my protein each day with eggs in the morning...usually hard boiled...that way at least i knew i had a complete food in me....I wasn't really that hungry at first and had a lot of discomfort when having to use the bathroom but i've heard from other people that there was no problem at all.....so obviously theres a variant here. Thats why when people ask me what to expect I can only give them truthfully a long term evaluation...it will all work out...and you will be thankful that you did it.

Thanks, Cynthia. I'll be gentle on the raw veggies. I sure hope he can tolerate those veggies and whole grains, because I know it keeps him feeling full faster, and it's better for his immune system.

Stepahny,

After RC they tend to put everyone on a regular diet right away. But as Pat said the bowels often seem to be out for revenge, now how they do that depends on the indivigual. Eating a normal diet was not a good idea at first for me and fiber caused a lot of gas as well as pain. What we did was back off the regular diet and treat my system as if it was a infants. We started with easily digested foods like simple protens. Then we reintroduced things one at a time then we would know what the problem child was and could avoid it, the last thing to be added was raw vegtables.
Your husband may be one of the lucky ones that can just go back to a regular diet from the first some people are able to. But if he starts having a lot of intestinal trouble or pain know that this is not by any means unusual. For some it just takes time for others it can be a lasting thing they have to learn to manage.
Hope this helps.

thanks for the advice. I'll go back to the room and find the number for the hospital dietician. He had ham and scrambled eggs and white toast today (shudder). I brought the fixin's for a blt with fresh tomatoes on whole grain bread. Maybe that will sound good to him tonight.

He was sounding really good this morning, and got another drain removed, but now he is back in bed, feeling cold.

Ups and downs.

I guarantee there is a registered dietitian there who can guide you--with your husband's intestines spliced together you might want to hold off on too much fiber.

I'm glad he's doing better. You're almost home!
