Surgery time has many variables...one being the surgeon. Others include any scar tissue or location of tumor/tumors.
My Indiana took 4hrs and 20 minutes......some neos are done in 3 l/2 hrs........robotics takes longer generally......
in others words there is no set time for the surgery.

My husband stayed in for 8 days. was supposed to be 9 but he bugged the Dr. and he let him go for good behavuor. We lived an hour from hospital but I stayed with him the whole time even in ICU. They usually don't let people do that. His Dr. told them to bring me in a recliner and make me comfortable because I wasn't going anywhere but to the bathroom. LOL Try to learn as much as you can about the surgery before hand. It helped me to know what was coming and comforted my husband to know that I was watching out that they were doing everything correctly. You will Both be okay. You are in my prayers. My husband was supposed to be in surgery 7 hrs it took 8. but they had no complications. there were two surgeons working together. he had the Indiana pouch that is a 7 hr surgery and I believe the neo bladder is 12 hrs. If they have coffee and hot chocolate in surgery waiting and you like both mix them it is really good. Goodluck God Bless You Both.

I posted on your other post. But then I thought I would respond on this too. Please take a deep breath.... now .... let it out slowly. That's good. You need your strength and sanity now.... more than ever.

The RC(Radical Cystectomy) is big time surgery indeed. The are going to remove the Bad Bladder and the prostate. The Dr. will take a part of the small intestine and make a new(neo)bladder with it. He(or she) will also replumb the rest of the system (bladder humor) This is the beginning of the rest of a cancer free life!

The hospital stay will be anywhere from 7 to 15 days. There will be a short stay in ICU, as they will want to watch over him for a while. he should be standing the day after surgery. he should also start trying to pass gas as soon as possible. Totally offensive outside the hospital.....Totally a goal, in the hospital.

Walking... Walking... Walking. This gets the juices moving and the intestines woken up. During your hospital stay, you won't eat much of anything. I lost a good amount of weight.... then gained most of it back the next year. But, the good news is .....you won't be hungry.

Keep a good attitude during your stay, and when you get home. This is My key to recovery. There Will be setbacks.... Your attitude will pull you through. So, make sure you have a good one. Your Dr. will also try a little harder if he knows you have the will to live. So..... have that will to live!

When you get home... We'll talk again. This is when the real work begins. Just get through the surgery and get out of the hospital. Make sure to make nice with the nursing staff... they are not housekeepers..... they know more about your condition than the Dr. and they can make your recovery start out right. I do indeed owe them the key to my recovery.

I have my best wishes out there for you.

George

Dana, I also posted to you on another thread. Let me also say that no one can say with 100% certainty that your husband will make it through this, but most of us do. Some of us on here including myself have been through multiple cancers and we are still around. There are no guarantees, you just have to take it one day at a time. A positive attitude will make a big differents for both of you!
Wishing you the best. Duke

Dana,
Most cystectomys are done open. They use the DaVinci or robotic a lot on prostate cancer but its still new in bladder cancer. I sent you information on that in another thread.
You really must ask the surgeon what his procedure will be.

Dana - I know you're so overwhelmed that you don't know which way to turn. There are so many factors that will decide how long you stay in the hospital. The long distance away from the hosp. to your home may be part of his reason for saying 15 days. From what you've told us, you and your husband are in good hands and I have no doubt you'll have a good outcome. The surgery is not fun and I can't imagine what the waiting must be like. If your dr. had another treatment that he believed was better than surgery I'm sure he would be going in that direction, instead of setting both of you on this route.

Trust and faith are hard things to have when life gets rough, but you need to find a peace with what's going on. I truly believe that how you deal with the emotions of the surgery will have a huge effect on how your husband feels as well. In my case, I spent a lot of time doing research (like you) and it was helpful to me to explain it to my husband and it calmed him down and made it an easier journey for me. (he was calm and had some idea of what would be happening, that meant I could be calm) Keep the nay sayers away! (my MIL told my husband that we were going to lose our house to medical bills!) It's easy to let your mind and the information you get be a burden and tear down the hope that you need. Know that not much else matters right now except your health and your husbands health.

Keep us posted on your husbands surgery.
Keeping you in thought and prayer -

Lynda
