Good to know that he is out of surgery. My surgery was 12 hours (doctor said I was compact on the inside :P ). I know that my husband felt like it was an eternity. It is so hard for the caregivers you have to wait and wonder.

My whole back seized up after surgery. The pain was worse than the incision site. The nurse told me it is because they have your arms tied up and out of the way during surgery so you get the mother of all cramps worse the longer your surgery is.

I still have a numb spot on the back of my leg, funny thing is when I sit down it always feels like it is wet. Luckily it is only the size of a dime. It is good to know that he felt strong enough to try and stand. Sorry that he collapsed I know that must have been scary. I bet that today he will not only stand but be walking very slowly around.

Thinking of you,

Thank you for keeping us posted. It may seem a simple thing to some but just knowing your husband returned to the ward and was even able to try and stand was comforting. Of course, I am terribly sorry his surgery went longer than expected and the additional tests and troubles you and he are experiencing. Please know that you are both on my mind. I would love to send a card or note of support to the hospital. If you feel comfortable with that let me know where to send it. Obviously, age, physical condition and mental attitude is going to determine how long someone needs assistance. I had my wife and she was a blessing to me. Not only did she care for me like an angel, she ran my home business while I was unable to. I was pretty much up and around after about a month. But, I had wound problems and that really complicated things for another 6 months after the RC. Ultimately I had another surgery to debride the wound and get rid of the tunnels that were preventing closure. So, be prepared for anything. :)

Good to know Mike. He says the tingling, numbness goes all the way up his leg. He tried to stand on it when they brought him back from ultrasound but collasped. Now he thinks that his back problem might be connected.

I had tingly on the inside of my right thigh for months after the surgery. Wasn't pain for me though. It was numb. Sometimes when they are getting the lymph nodes, some nerves can be damaged but that resolves over time.

Could just be that but it's good that the doctor is going to check it out.

What a long day. Up at 3, hospital at 5:30. He went in at 7:45am and the surgery was 8 1/2 hrs. I didn't see him until 7:00 pm. He was groggy of couse but in a lot of pain from an old back injury not from the surgery site. After about 30 min. he started to compain about his right calf. He said it felt like a charlie horse and that it was tingly. The nurses used a doppler (like when you are trying to find a baby's heartbeat) and decided to call the Dr. He ordered an ultrasound of his right leg. So now he is getting that done. I have a hotel room but I'm afraid to go there and leave him alone. Memo to Rich's wife, plan on spending the night at he hospital.
