Pat
I've been following your recent problems and as usual I admire you sense of humor and honesty.

I hope the very best for you with whatever the next step is.

I love Stephany's idea of calling the nurses desk. How funny would that be?

Maybe we could set up a live web cam in your room....:woohoo:

I want you to get better quick!

How to win over Nurses and get the care you need!!!..Stephanie you're a riot......my bet is they would all stand around me to watch the explosion.
My next door neighbor is going with me who is a RN at that hospital and she knows my routine and she will make sure they keep on top of it. I'm going to show her how to cath me today just in case i flip out and become "mean Pat" on all the drugs. I've warned the doc about my reaction to drugs..they never believe me but once i've been given the versaid i talk non-stop...any little thing that pops into my head i say and i CAN'T stop it..its wierd and very embarassing. And i usually wake up or so it seems and carry on quite lucid conversations that i do not remember.."Evil Pat" taking over again. Then they get mad at me the second time i really wake up and ask the same questions!! Heck i just hope i wake up! I know i shouldn't make the comparison but i never thought when they put my husband out that he would not wake up....no goodbyes, no conversations as to how much he meant to me...all the things you do not say before major surgery so as not to frighten the patient. My grief is a continuing saga.

And are you still having the headaches, etc. from the spinal fluid? My sister said there is a procedure they can do, some kind of spinal "block" that would relieve that. Her son got monster headaches after a tap, and had the procedure for relief. That's number one problem.

Number two problem....can you find a patient rep in the hospital into whom you can put the fear of God....."if you aren't watched, you're going to raise holy hell" who will then pass on the fear to the head nurse? Or just a mask to wear over your eyes, with "IF YOU DON'T DRAIN MY INDIANA POUCH EVERY THREE HOURS, IT WILL EXPLODE ALL OVER THE ROOM. SEE ARROW BELOW."

It does seem like every precaution a person takes can be ignored or bypassed by someone who isn't expecting something out of the ordinary. Maybe you could set up an automatic email or phone call to the nurses station that would say, every two hours "who has drained Patricia's pouch?"

Or, let us do it. We'll start a schedule. Send us the phone number of the floor office, and we'll take turns calling and asking if your pouch has been drained. We can post the "I and O" here on line, and keep track.

Anything we can do to help, we'd do.

Pat,

Lay down the pizza and back away!!!!!

As Mike says call your doctor and talk. If they do not seem to have any experience with post RC considerations find someone that does. You would be the first one to give someone else that exact advice now wouldn't you? You are not the first person to have this done following an RC my doctor knew what was going on with me and took it into consideration.

As for your diversion put a indwelling cath in during the procedure make sure they know to keep an eye on it case it blocks up with mucus. Using a new sterile set up to cath for a short period should be OK and not cause an infection but even on the off chance it did you would catch it. Having a UTI is not something anyone wants but in this case knowing all is well with your colon is more important than taking that chance.

Now chin up darlin and get on with it!

Pat,

Wouldn't the CT scan help him know? Maybe you could ask his nurse if he's done these for people who have had the same procedure?

Maybe you can go in and chat with the doctor or ask them to have him call you prior to the procedure to answer your questions.

Last resort would be to go in for the appointment, but let them know you have questions prior to the procedure beginning.
