So sorry you are in the hospital Sailorman. However I bet gettting an IV of antibiotics will put a killing in that infection. Take care of yourself and keep us posted please.
I'd send you some good non-hospital food if I could.;)

So I went in this morning to get my neph tube and scan.
On the positive side, the dye showed no blockages in the ureter.
On the negative side, they found an infection in the kidney
and admitted me while they fight it with IV antibiotics.

My doc visited a little while ago and reviewed things with me.
The infection MAY have been the reason for slow drainage but
they still might put in a stent at a narrow point. The first
priority is to culture what they got out of my kidney so they can
match up the right antibiotic. He thinks I'll be able to leave on
Sunday.

Been there done that… sorry you have this to deal with. The good news for you sounds like they caught it before the kidney was damaged. In my case it happened at first gradually then very fast and by the time we figured out the ureter was completely blocked that was not the case, be happy your Uro is being proactive.

The neph tube is tedious (hate to keep using that word but it works) but is not that big of a deal. If we have had a RC we know about dealing with tubes. I had them put an extension on the tubing so that I could flush it myself but if they tie yours into to your super pubic that will not be an issue for you. I think the thing that bothers me most is that I have to have someone else change the bandage covering it as it is on my back and I cannot reach it.

When you go to interventional radiation they using a CT scan to put the tube in it was interesting to watch the proceedings on TV as well as when they put in the die. By the way there was no real discomfort when they actually did the neph tube.

Keep us updated and let us know what the next step is for you.

Thanks for the info. I'm around here a fair amount and have been for 6 months or so. I expect they will tie this tube in with my suprapubic so I don't have to have 2 bags. My doc said he could do that so here's hoping we can get that done.

Hey, Sailorman! My husband had the same problem. They told him it was because they had to stretch the ureters to make the connection to the new bag. He had to wear the nephrostomy bag until they got it sorted out.

There are ways to make that more pallatable...keep in touch here at the site, and you'll get lots of advice.
