Worried about my weight

I thought I'd throw in a quick note about weight loss after bladder replacment surgery. I had mine in August and I went from 224lbs to 195lb. I was initially quite pleased and then dismayed at how thin I was. I have always hovered on the slightly heavy side.
Early on I had no appetite and didn't gain weight back quickly. Then around Thanksgiving I flipped a switch and suddenly gained back my appetite, in spades!
Soon I was back to worrying about too much weight gain and had to stop all of the nice ice cream treats and milk shakes.
I guess, if I am any kind of judge, the weight thing will rectify itself and can quickly go the other way if left to its own devices.
I would also like to agree with the flare up of arthritis. My right hip has always been a little sore from an active childhood( 53 years of youthful activities) but it never gave me any real problem. Until 1 month after my surgery. I quickly started to have REAL problems with it. I started out just being sore in the am and after a long time seated. Very quickly I began to have trouble walking normally. I was going to the gym an noticed that I was really having trouble recovering. Exercise was supposed to make it better but was making it much worse.
I had both of my hips x rayed and my family doc said I had severe arthritis in my hip. Wow, this came on fast. Now I may have some explanation if surgery can cause a flare up.

Thanks for the replies.
I mentioned this to my friend who is a nurse, recently I have had a very severe rheumatoid arthritis flare and Rx steroids to help.
She says steroids can effect your blood sugar levels .......... hope that is all it is as I have enough to contend with health wise.
I have an appointment with PC doc on Monday and also emailed my surgeon for advice and will update when he replies.

Hi Maria...it probably would be prudent to do a fasting blood sugar.....but i lost over 23 lbs with my surgery and it took me about a year to put it back on ...and i must admit i loaded up with calories in lots of ice cream and mocha drinks...probably not the best thing for me but it took me a while to get my appetite back.

I had my RC surgery in Sept. and I did experience blood sugar problems immediately after the surgery. They would check me 3 times a day and I think they even gave me 2 insulin shots. ( After surgery, I didn't have sense enough to ask what they were giving me but they wanted to give them in my stomach and I protested. I got them in my arm and I know that is how insulin is given.)
When I left the hospital, my sugar was down to 120 from about 160 and was told to check with my primary care doctor. I saw her in October and she wanted to wait until Jan for the tests. Both my urologist and primary care said that surgery does affect sugar level much like a pregnancy can. Since I was not having any symptoms, she said it was best to wait and I have an appointment for the first week in Jan.

However, I have not lost weight. I was only down about 5 pounds after surgery and that was probably due to everything they took out. I was hoping to lose more and have fun gaining it back. I weigh about 120 now. Hope this helps you some.

Hi!

Not sure how blood sugar readings are measured in The USA compared with the UK but if the reading is 'a bit high' it might be worth having a fasting level done. One of the symptoms of diabetes is weight loss. Other symptoms are: frequent urination (difficult to tell with the neobladder possibly), thrush, tiredness and lethargy and faint smell of peardrops on the breath.

Don't mean to scare you but, if you are predisposed to diabetes then the stress of the operation etc might bring it on.

Mind you it could just be the fact that you have had a very difficult time recently. Wish my weight would drop or at the very least, stay put!

Call me if you need to.

Could anyone help........... I have only gained 2lbs in weight since September. I now weigh 108 llbs. I eat 3 good meals a day.
MD anderson checked thyroid / cbc normal, blood sugar little high at 132
They advised me to go to primary care for further investigations, I would have thought they would have helped me!

Had RC done July, any ideas if the surgery could have caused some problems?
Has anyone else had this problem, I was 135lbs before surgery. Any advice to possible cause?

thanks
maria
