HI Nancy, I will be thinking of you Friday. Walking is one of the best things you can do to get better after surgery. I have now been through 4 major surgeries and I know getting up and walking and moving around helped me a lot. The last few times Dick and i have been in the hospital here in Tucson they gave us heparin shots in our bellies every day to prevent blood clotting. You might get a blood thinner through your IV. Thanks Sandy and Rick. As the day gets closer, I am becoming less stressed and more resolved to my destiny. I did have some more bad news yesterday though. Dr. Bochner found I had some sort of blood problem and referred me to a hemologist. He called me yesterday to say that I have a condition called lupus anticoagulent. It is not lupus but gets its name I guess from that disease because a lot of people with lupus have this. Got that info from the internet.
This causes a blood clotting problem and I am at much greater risks for clots and strokes. Therefore after the surgery they will get me up sooner than most and I must walk a lot. They will also give me a blood thinner after the surgery. I know everyone must walk to get their bowels moving again. I will just need to do more than the usual.

It does scare me but there is nothing I can do but trust the doctors and hospital.

Balihigh,
I have not had any UTI at all. The only problem is that when I remove the pouch once a week, I scratch like the dickens. The hair that grows under the pouch seems to say, "Itch me". So, I indulge for about 2-3 minutes a week. The benefits are that my finger nails are cut and filed every week before changing my bag (this prevents scratch marks).
As far as standing to relive yourself, I know that is a challenge for women that have the Indiana Pouch too. Maybe they can give you tricks of the trade. I would like to hear those stories: "There I was standing relieving myself in the women's room when the lady in the stall next to mine said..."

Take Care
Rick

Hi, Nancy!

Since I am primarily a lurker on this site, few people know me but I feel compelled to respond to your request for a woman's view of "the bag" (tho I have learned that "pouch" is the correct terminology which I think has helped my attitude tremendously.) I too found the pouch my only choice and would like to assure you that it is not a bad choice at all.

I have been lucky in that I never had a problem finding the right pouch and I do find a peculiar satisfaction is being able to stand to empty and love actually being able to sleep thru the night!

It seems we are close in age and I do understand all the doubts and fears that you have and will have. It has been almost a year since my surgery and I still have a hard time believing what has happened to me. My husband has been totally dedicated to keeping me well and continuing to love me. The pouch does not bother him at all and I am sure I am more confident for it.

Please email me if I can be of any help as you go along this journey, Nancy. It's never fun but always necessary........
