Hi again

John is doing a little better, he finally had NG tube inserted and after a few days they have given him enemas and he has now had some bowel movement.
He just seems so up and down mentally. I suppose this is to be expected. Still no pathology report from the RC. :(

the waiting is just awful.

Thanks for the good wishes, they sure help

My husband, Harry had difficulties after surgery with his bowels. After finally passing gas and being put on soft food he threw up. Like Pat mentioned, he also had a CT scan and although a specific blockage was not located, they did find extra liquid in his abdomen. Another drain was inserted which took care of it. The NG tube was reinserted. He said it was uncomfortable, but wasn't as bad as he had imagined. He was given only ice chips to "eat" for many days. The "stuff" coming out of the NG tube was a dark green color-pretty yukky. He also had the PIC line inserted for nutrition. His doctors were not overly concerned (after they ruled out a blockage) and the nurses said that some people just take longer to get the bowels going than others. The surgery is not an easy one and it will be quite some time before he is feeling much better. It is difficult but patience is the key. One day at a time... I will definitely keep him in prayer. Keep us posted on how he is doing. Margot

Thanks for the replies, its appreciated.

he did not have a NG tube post op. I am not sure if this is normal practice in the UK? He is terrified of having one inserted.

He had no bowel sounds 4th day post op and had an x-ray and 2 enemas - this produced lots of loose stools, but the vomitting has continued.

Nurses seem concerned, but not docs, he is giving up hope and is so disillusioned (as I am ) He really expected to feel better than this at this stage.

Your partner has an ileus...a blocked small intestine...this happens frequently but usually clears on its own. The procedure here is to put the NG tube back in...and a CT scan to see if they can see the obstruction....and in my case which isn't the norm i had to be opened back up as a piece of my small intestine got trapped under my ureter...that is rare. I also had to have a PIC line put in to feed me intravenously.
I remember the green bile well...kind of like Linda Blair in The Exorcist.
Good luck...i hope your doctors figure this out............Pat
