Please don't stop preaching--far too few in either the general population or the medical community are knowledgeable about this.

Just want to agree with Patricia on this B-12 issue. Mayo's has been testing my B-12 since my 3 month check up - I doubt they would do it if they felt it would likely be ok for years. My hubby and I had a few words when I refused the shots...he had research B-12 deficiency and it is scary. Dementia, a specific anemia, and he wanted me "shot" to avoid that. My levels are considered to be way low but I am hoping they will be better since I am doing sublingual tabs.
By the way, I tried the mega dose (2000 grains) daily to try to absorb what I needed ,,,it didn;t absorb from the tablet. God Bless, Holly
PS The stats on the elderly and B-12 deficiency are real...googl search and see.

Well they're wrong.....we're supposed to have 3 to 5 yrs of storage but it definately varies from individual to individual...maybe the women deplete faster than the men?...Lord knows they never test the women. The only place Bl2 can be absorbed is in the ilium...if the surgeon has used it in the surgery its got to go directly into the blood stream via the sub-lingual tablet, a shot, or hopefully the patch as it seems to be working for Marigold. I'm really surprised at how many doctors just pooh pooh the idea of a B l2 deficiency...the oncologist has really no idea how these pouches are made so he ignores it...nor does the general M.D. know...half the surgeons don't know it.....my uro was the only one who tested me for it and who actually knew that part of the intestine was responsible for absorption. There's sometimes another factor..the intrinsic factor which makes it impossible to absorb Bl2 from the stomach...my brother has that and has to take Bl2 every day. Many elderly people are Bl2 deficient and they're not tested for it...they attribute their memory loss to dementia or Alzheimers...i did research on this about l5 yrs ago...some very scary numbers came up of people in nursing homes who really just had Bl2 deficiency. OK i'm done preaching..... ;D Pat

That's exactly what Dr. Stein told me--that we have several years of B12 stored in our bodies.

Still, I don't mind sticking one under my tongue every few days.

Pat had warned me about this possibility B-12 deficiency....so I asked this question of two different doctors on my team...the first one responded like my question had no merit, the second doctor said, if it happens, it will be several years down the road. So I asked my family doctor to test me so that I would have a starting point to work from...said it is fine, but least ways I will know if there are any changes later on. Melodie

My oncologist told me that very high doses of B12 in pill form can "force" themselves to be absorbed. I take a sublingual every now and then--not sure if it really does anything, but they don't cost much and they're harmless otherwise.
