The treatment after a TURB is a wash of the bladder with mitomycin and it was probably done while you were still asleep. The doctor is doing the second TURB to be sure that all the cancer that they could get was removed and that enough muscle was included in the sample to determine that this cancer hasn’t spread. Whatever the results of the second TURB showwill determine what treatment you should have.

When the results are all in you and the doctor will have a discussion of what the treatment options are . It is too early to know if you have non-invasive high grade bladder cancer in which case the usual standard of treatment would be BCG or a similar treatment or if it is in the muscle in which case the treatment options are quite different.

Unfortunately there is a lot of suspenseful waiting in this game. We will keep our fingers crossed for you!

After reading this, should I be concerned that there was no treatment after my TURBT? They found HIGH-GRADE Papillary Urothelial Carcinoma with focal invasion of the Lamina Propria being seen. I am having a 2nd TURBT done the 16th where they are going to biopsy the muscle this time. Would this be the time that a treatment would normally follow directly after surgery?
Cancer of all sorts seems to run rampant in my family and several members have told me to request a PET Scan. The oncologist said that this type of cancer is contained in the bladder and a CT Scan is just as good. IF the cancer is in the muscle, would that make requesting a PET Scan more reasonable to do?

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network has taken on the project of producing extensive "Guides" for patients diagnosed with various cancers. The one for bladder cancer has just been released:

www.nccn.org/patients/guidelines/bladder/index.html

The American Bladder Cancer Society has had the opportunity to follow along as this concept was developed and is proud to endorse it.

We hope that you find it informative and useful!!
