Sometimes microscopic urinary blood is due to a bladder infection, and yes they would send the sample out to be cultured to see if there is any bacteria there. If so, you will probably be put on an antibiotic for a bit.

As for "TB" being put into the bladder, the usual treatment for recurring OR high grade bladder cancer is a substance called "BCG" (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) which is a modified tb bacterium. The bladder is washed with a solution of this and this causes the bladder lining immune system to kick up and fight the cancer cells. It can be very effective. There is a LOT of information on this Forum about BCG (look at the saved posts under the heading "Non-invasive".)

Gizmo,

Re-reading your thread I just have a feeling a second opinion might just be in order. You certainly want to put to rest your hematuria. While none of us are doctors it is possible further testing such as a CT Scan to rule out other urinary tract issues or tumors besides some "fresh" eyes in your case. If for no other reason than piece of mind.

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.

Just saw my urologist yesterday and urine showed blood. He is doing a culture and then sending to lab in Chattanooga. He will do cystscopy in May. Has anyone heard of TB being put in bladder to get rid of cells? Is it common to send to lab and do culture? Thanks everyone. My first turb was done November 2015.

Woops, Gizmo. I thought that I had answered your previous post but must have had a "senior moment" so I will reply to it first.

You have the very "best" kind of bladder cancer, and your urologist's protocol is exactly what it should be. BUT please remember that bladder cancer has a nasty habit of sometimes returning. This puts the responsibility on YOU to be SURE that you keep those appointments...usually every three months for two years, every six months until five years have passed, and then once a year forever. Don't skip them!

As for the blood...I am assuming that since it only showed up on test strips that is is microscopic. It wouldn't be surprising since the biopsy did some real cutting on the bladder lining. However, I would mention it to the urologist, for your peace of mind if nothing else.
