Hi, Warren - looking ahead - if you will need BCG, I doubt if the "Braveheart" reseblance will occur during your treatments (:<). The BCG insertion device is a small-diameter, long, disposable plastic catheter that my urologist makes sure is lubed up with slick stuff. During the first treatment, I felt a little pain after it had been inserted a ways. The uro said he was getting it past my sphincter muscles around the prostate, so to just try to totally relax my pelvic area. That worked - it went on into my bladder without further irritation. He had to tell me to relax again while he was pouring in the BCG solution, so it would flow freely into my bladder. Since then, my additional insertions of BCG have been a breeze - I just concentrate on totally relaxing all muscles in my abdominal area - it works well for me.

I miss Bend at times - I used to ski at Mt. Bachelor - one of my favorites.

The best to you for your upcoming TURBT. Don't give the Oregon nurses too hard a time!

Cheers - Maryland (ex-K Falls) Mike

That describes the "pain" exactly!!!!! I tell my friends that it was like the ending to "Braveheart", you know the scene. However, they have taken three urine samples to, plus the pain was before he filled me with water, so I guess that rules out a tissue sample. Either way I will be talking to my doctor about it.

He may have taken a tissue sample. With me, when he tried that, I shot off the table and came close to hitting my entire body on the ceiling. Not sure if he would have been able to sneak that in without you knowing.

When they send urine for cytology analysis, that goes to pathology. I think that's probably more likely but if they can take samples from your bladder wall while your awake you are in the elite group. I know a few people here mentioned they had that. I know I was not real pleased when it was tried on me. :)

Yes it was the first time, the day before was the first time I had ever gone to a Urologist. On the 6th I go back for a TURBT, but for that one I will be out.

I'm starting to wonder if that was the smallest scope he could use, this week I got a bill for a "pathology report", which suggest that he took a tissue sample. Because I had a CT scan the day before he knew ahead of time that there was a tumor there. I don't know, I guess I will find out next month.

Was the cysto your first time to have equipment inserted up there? This is the first time I've heard of different size catheters, and makes me wonder. I just completed the BCG treatments, and each one only took like 5 minutes. No problem with the tube insertion. My first cysto, being awake, is in January. They need a bigger tube? Now this newbie intends to ask. Good ideas here to help solve your discomfort. Good luck.

Warren,

I understand. We were all pretty shell shocked when we found out about the bladder.

Well...I guess there are some of those folks (a few have graced us with their presence on these pages) who are convinced they have one type of cancer or another constantly and seem a bit disappointed when they don't have it. But I digress.... :)

Good luck on 6th!!!!

Mike

Maybe that catheter will stretch things a bit after a couple of times so it won't be so bad. Good luck with it and be sure the doc knows you're serious about the pain.
