As others have noted, neobladders are statistically more problematic for females, although many do just as well as men. There tends to be more problems with continence, both too little and too much in female patients. And although it is true that the sensation is different than the normal bladder, I have absolutely no problem knowing when mine is becoming full. You are partially right in that ileal conduits are an older procedure, they are, however they are totally appropriate for many patients and many are perfectly happy with them. This was my back up plan should the neobladder have been medically inadvisable and I am sure I would have adapted to that. I think that we are marvelously able to adapt to our diversions and most folks seem to be quite happy with their diversion, even if it has some quirks. None are a perfect replacement and require an adaptation, but none seem to interfere with life style. Of course if you want to wear a bikini, an ileal conduit would probably require some personal strength, but anyone who can go through this has that strength. No matter what diversion you pursue, you need a surgeon with extensive experience with the diversion. Best wishes,

jj

I completely missed the thread Mike brought up. How could that have happened? Oh yeah! I wasn't in this loop then. I still had cancer.

My neo bladder is far from perfect. I still have to get up 3 times a night. I still have to push to fully empty. I still leak at times.

But I am used to it after 2 years. And like a "pain in the neck sibling" I wouldn't trade it for nuthin' I am sure you will hear many points of view on this and ALL of them will be right!

Make an informed choice and be happy that it made you cancer free!

Oh the neo stories I could tell.

My surgeon outlined the possibilities but he clearly preferred that I go with the ileal conduit. I learned later that it might have been because of my age. I’m 70. The keymo and surgery went well so I am now getting used to dealing with the stick on bag. I get upset with the unplanned leaky bag but as my technique improves this becomes less common. I’m sure there will be a wonderful day in the future when I accept the bag as just a part of my daily routine. I’m not quite there yet so I reserve the right to cuss and rant and rave at the damn bags for ruling my life! Of course there is the overpowering result of all this medical stuff and that is my cancer free diagnosis. That makes it all worth it.

I'm 70, retired heat/air contractor. After 4 months of keymo ileal conduit (IC) surgery removed bladder & prostate May 2010
