I live in Bristol, VA, and I was referred to Vanderbilt in Nashville by my local urologist because he was not experienced in my type of tumor. It's a 300-mile trip but worth it for the care I receive. I'm currently returning every 3 months for cystoscopies. My doctor there is Dr. Cookson, and another member here, Flo, just had RC surgery by Dr. Smith there.

Pat's suggestion of John Hopkins is another excellent option if that fits into your planning.

Best wishes... Catherine

Hi Year1,
Don't know about bladder cancer expertise in Virginia. Does insurance require you to stay there? The best in the country..at least ranked #1 Urologically is Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. I'd recommend Dr. Mark Schoenberg

Dr. Guruli is new to VCU..most of his training outside the US and fellowship at U. of Pittsburg. I would ask how many cystectomys he does a year and reconstructions.

My husband is in the middle of staging and developing a treatment plan for newly diagnosed T2a bladder cancer. Does anyone have information about the best bladder cancer centers in or near Virginia? Does anyone have experience with Dr. Guruli at VCU? Thank you.
