Thanks Mike,

Yes my surgery was this last wednesday the 27th. and at this point i'm not able to tolerate small sips of water (even ice chips) without nausea and diarreha. THe nurses are expecting about 10 day in the hospital, and that I won't be discharged until I'm eating a regular diet.

Well the good news is the bowels are working...hope the bad news isn't C-diff. Wait for the culture.
As for nausea...yep...had lots of that and it continued after i went home on and off. They should give you some Zofran for that. They didn't have that particular drug when i was in and i got phenergan for it and later some Ativan which was effective and didn't turn my urine orange. So don't be shy...ask for the anti-nausea meds. It just comes with the territory for some.
Ask them if you can have clear liquids yet and see if you can keep it down.
hang in there moma!!

Not being on clear liquids yet is common.
Diarrhea--I'm not sure. I think usually the problem is nothing at all happening yet on that end. It wouldn't surprise me but I'm just not sure.

I think you said surgery was on the 27th? It helps to remind us when you post a question about an early complication/situation.

Usually, after the surgery, the hospital stay is 4 to 8 days depending on the intestines getting working again. A lot also depends on age and general physical condition in terms of how soon one gets out.

They usually give clear liquids once there are signs the bowels are working. Nurses always seem to be happily excited when you get gas. :) Nobody else ever appreciated it before! :D

Pretty fast after clear liquids they will do a soft diet. As long as the person doesn't have vomitting or pain or other problems with the liquid diet, that is.

I'm a newbie here and I can't answer your question because I did not have your kind of surgery, but I wanted to say that I hope you are feeling better very, very soon.

Best wishes... Catherine

 Wonder if this is common, still no order for clear liquids (jello, 7-up etch) heading off for x-ray and stool sample for c-diff. How long should i expect this to last?
