Looking for Dr in Minnesota and some advice

Joy, I'm very sorry I didn't respond sooner! I haven't checked these forums lately.

I chose Dr Konety and am pleased with my decision. I've been very busy with my normal life while going through BCG treatments which went quite well with Dr Konety and staff.

I've been kind of avoiding the forums to take my mind off the BC thing - you can overdose on all this, it's important to take a healthy break. But I'm getting ready to share an update and treatment experience with others in the forums.

I was wondering if you ever had any luck finding a doctor in Rochester that you were happy with. My father in law was just diagnosed with bladder cancer and he is headed up to mayo later this month. He is in northern Iowa and we are in central Iowa. There we will figure out if it has spread beyond the muscle and to the nodes. (I don't have all of the information or knowledge on his situation...just that they are talking about removing the bladder and prostate). I have given him konety's name and location as well as Odonnell's....I just want him to have the best (as you said, don't we all)! I would like to know the name of the doctor you had been seeing in Rochester...message me this if you would, please? Thank you!!!

Gracie, your post is a very important one for me! Thanks for taking the time to tell me your experience with Dr Konety. It sure sounds like he's a good man and an excellent doctor. Looking forward to my appointment.

Interesting Konety, Dr Odonnell, and Lamm worked together on BCG treatments - and they all know each other. Since I'll be considering BCG with Konety it reassures me he knows what he's doing.

Pat, it's funny how Blute "retired" but moved to MA to head up Urology! How funny! I suppose these hospitals have recruiters working full time trying to get the best players in their court. Mayo also had a Dr Robert Myers who was considered top doc for prostate cancer - but he retired too. Most of their bladder cancer specialists are very young (young for a top doc anyway). I was very surprised.

Looking forward to my appointment with Konety. We have a few questions for him, not too many. I just want to understand my situation, risks, and choices. I've read a lot on the internet, but I want a top professional explaining and advising me. I really feel I'll be in good hands with him.

Andy, the choice you made is a choice I'm considering. I'm 50, so I plan to be around for a while. I definitely want my best odds. I'll be discussing all this at my appointment on Thursday afternoon with Konety. I'm leaning to try BCG, but I want the doctor to tell it to me straight so I can make an informed choice. I've read long term, I'll most likely lose my bladder even if BCG is successful (sometime within 15 years based on my reading). There is so much risk with bladder cancer - got to be careful.
