Mike\'s crazy theory on BPH and Bladder cancer

No problem Vi. That doesn't really detract from my original theory which is primarily enlarged prostate and there are no ladies I know with that problem. ;)

In order not to EXCLUDE women, I decided to throw that question in, just in case there were some who had voiding problems due to whatever reasons.

For men, I'm sure BPH is the largest contributor to incomplete voiding problems, but I don't want to exclude any causes incomplete voiding problems, because I think that's the thing that causes the increased risk.

Sorry too that I can't help your idea become a reality because I had absolutely no symptoms or urination problems. There was microscopic amounts of blood in my urine (only seen in a test when I was having stomach issues) and that is how they discovered it.

That's ok George. It can't be the cause of ALL bladder cancer, but I think it's a contributor.

Just like smoking is a leading cause. Just because someone doesn't smoke, doesn't gaurantee they won't get it.

My theory is that it increases the risk.

Sorry Mike. I have already failed the test. No voiding issues here before Bc, and no enlarged prostate issues either.

Mike--

I don't think that theory is so crazy at all! Part of the problem with looking at the relationship of retention/bladder cancer from a statistical point of view is that so many men have BPH that it is highly likely that almost all men "of a certain age" who develop bladder cancer are also likely to have BPH (and of ocurse a lot of people with BPH don't ever get bladder cancer). I've never had retention problems, but I've kind of wondered if my tendency to "wait" a long time before going might have been a risk factor. Moral of the story: go when yuo have to and flush out those carcinogens (unless of course if you have an enlarged prostate and can't empty completely. I really feel for the guys!)

Ann

Small TA Grade 1, May-06; recur (2 tiny), same, June-08; TURBTs both times. BCG begun July-08, dosage to 1/3rd May-10, completed treatment December-11. All clear since 2008.
