Not much burn at all from the last couple of times. (whew!).

Lessons learned: Next time don't drink ANYTHING the day of the treatment. Start drinking massive amounts of water 1 3/4 hours after instillation.

Well this time there was only shooting pain before and right at the start of urinating. Looks the water is getting through my system and doing its job.

Your advice sounds pretty right on. I do think, tho, that I would ask the Doc first about the bicarb.
Maybe TB cells work better in an acidic environment. :o

Hi,

this burning, since it is not with desire , is something I am pleased I have managed to avoid so far as with pain after TURBT & TURP.

Since the pain seems to be a chemical burn - firstly have you tried drinking SEVERAL pints of water during the last 1/4hr. of treatment to start flushing immediately and frequently after the treatment ends and also diluting the bladder content.

Alternatively or even in conjunction try taking Bicarbonate of Soda tablets to reduce the acidity of the urine your kidneys extract - this might help as putting uric acid into an already tender bladder can hardly be the best of ways to avoid a burning sensation :-/

Thanks for the replies and ideas. After posting the message, I started drinking water and have taken in 64oz so far. My urologist is only a 10 minute drive so I just come home and we have a bathroom set up and reserved for my use.

My daughter-in-law is pregnant and they visit regularly so we want to keep this BCG stuff VERY isolated.
It also means I can a keep measuring cup and bleach handy in that bathroom. The bathroom is off limits to everyone else.

Still have the shooting pain immediately before having to go (it's only the second urination since starting this). Looked like some blood at the end of it. Not thrilled about that idea because I sure don't want this stuff in my bloodstream. REALLY burned to urinate this time. Hopefully, all this water gets through me quick to dilute this.

Is it ok to take peridium or something to lessen the pain (or do I need to go without in order to tell if there is blood). Doesn't hurt much when I'm not urinating.

I was actually expecting this to be a bit easier because so many folks said the first few were a piece of cake. Oh well....we're all different as they say.

Mike - I found the best idea for any intubation where they introduce washes into the bladder that have to be held in was to try to get an appointment for 14.00hrs. (because I've known them years they will fix times if they can   ) I then don't drink ANYTHING from midnight the night before.

I must admit that when I arrive I put a two pint bottle of fresh orange in the nurses fridge and after the treatment is over I drink all of it within about 15 minutes! :o

I always stay in the hospital - pop into a couple of the wards I use and into the urology unit for a chat then read a paper in the canteen until I have had the first 'serious' urination - this ensures that I'm not bleeding and that I use a hospital toilet for any heavily contaminated urine.

This schedule means I'm sure I have no complications and I can drive the 20 miles home without any problems.

Perhaps this sort of schedule might help you.
