I now developed pretty severe lower back pain. That's a bladder cancer symptom as well isn't it?

Glad the ultrasound is negative.

I'm sorry to say cytology is not very specific for low grade bladder cancer but rather good for aggressive bladder cancer. It's the standard of care - along with cystoscopy - for bladder cancer diagnostics. Show this to your doctor:

"The chief symptom of bladder cancer is hematuria, or blood in the urine. All people who have visible blood in the urine should be considered to have bladder cancer until proven otherwise. Because hematuria can come and go, a negative result on urinalysis cannot exclude the diagnosis of bladder cancer."

www.emedicine.com/med/topic2344.htm Dr. Gary Steinberg, MD

I'm sorry to seem so alarmist but don't want your doctor to miss anything because of the fact you're so young. All the more reason to be very sure...

Best,
Wendy

ok the cytology came back. how accurate is that for detecting bladder cancer? I had an ultrasound as well which came back negative.

P.S... she also has mico blood in her urine every time she is tested. The doctor says some people just have that. She is 30 yrs old now and just had a baby with no strain on the bad kidney. It doesn't function as well as the other one but the good one picks up the slack. take care, elaine

I didn't have any BC symptoms at all. They found mine in an ultrasound for my ovaries. Totally by accident. I had no pain, blood, frequency of urination or anything. The tumor was 5 cm. My doctor was totally taken aback when he got the radiologist's report citing a bladder mass as well as the ovary cysts. I don't know much about all this but I think I would check your kidneys. My daughter has a malformed kidney and had much the same symptoms as yours in her mid twenties. She is monitored by a urologist and has to have a low dose of cipro occasionally. There are so many things that can go wrong in the urinary tract that a good urologist is a must. Let us know what you find. Good luck, elaine
