hi Mike,
thank you for your empathy. i absolutely agree. and, i had already talked to some folks on here (the incredible Pat), and when the doc (one of the top ones in the US, at USC) asked what diversion i wanted i told him the Indiana Pouch. then, a week before the surgery he said he was going to do the neo. we talked, but that's what he wanted to do. i keep asking myself, was i another "try", "experiment" to see if it would work on a woman. even the "best docs" falter. i don't know. i will make my point w/him once this is all over. right now, he's reluctant to put anything in writing, hmmm....so, i'll see what this other doc has to say .Sidra

sidra, I am assuming that your neobladder was not done at USC? If you are being seen at the urology department there, you are in good hands. They are one of the tops in the country for treatment of bladder cancer.

Sidra,

Given the high complication rate for women, I often wonder why surgeons even attempt neobladders for women. Sorry to hear about your complications and I hope they are able to do something for you.

Sure seems like Indiana Pouch should be the 'Gold Standard' for urinary diversion for women.

Be sure to tell your doctor to put you on the list of "failed neobladders for women" and have him bring it up at his next conference. Maybe the more the urologists get together and finally figure out how low the neobladder success rate is for women, they will change the guidelines for recommended treatment.

Of course there are women who don't have complications with the neobladder but the complication rate is MUCH higher for women.

Good luck with your appointment!

hi all, well, to recap, i had an RC with a neo bladder put in, in July 2010 and am totally incontinent. my surgeon referred me to another doc who wants to do a "hammock". i posted about that @ 2 weeks ago. thanx for everyone's input and help. i do not want to proceed with a hammock, i have read nothing good about them. i have an appointment with another doc at the same place (USC) on tuesday. i sure hope SHE has an alternative with which i can live. i guess switching to another diversion will depend on how much intestine was taken during the neo surgery last year.
i welcome any input. i will have my questions ready for my appointment. thanx, Sidra :S
