Interesting subject as i'm sure its all happened to us as newbies...i shall never forget my evening of projectile mucus...that was interesting. I too have an Indiana but my surgeon/uro had me irrigate every time with 30cc's of sterile saline solution for the first 3 months...and not to worry if it didn't come back out again. At about the year mark mucus easily came out and i honestly just forgot to irrigate anymore. I will do it once in a while as one gets very familiar with the temperment of the new bladder...honestly wouldn't you think it would love an occasional hot fudge sundae?.....???? But NOOOOOOOO...i do it anyway!!! xxoo Pat

Sharon the good news is with time the mucus situaion does seem to get better for most of us I also am to the point I only see a lot if a UTI is brewing. I would ask my Uro about irragating more than once a week for a while. I have heard that some Uro's advise once a day while mine advised every other day or so keep in mind that I have an Indiana. You also might want to keep a box of larger sized caths around if you use a 14 french you might want to have some 16's around. Also ask your Uro about irrigating while using a larger cath if you are having trouble with your voiding volume again. I have some 60cc irrigation syringes that fit perfectly into the end of the cath. Another thought and this might sound crazy is that I hear from people that what they eat can have a profound affect on the amount of mucus they have. One lady I know has trouble when she has dairy products and another swears that MSG does a job on her. You might want to keep a food diary and try to see if anything you are eating causes an increase. The water is of course important so good job there cranberry in pill or liquid is something that I know some swear by. Remember these are all just suggestions I am not a doctor but you might want to talk them over with your Uro with the others suggestions that will follow in other posts. Hang in there as we all know everything breaks and goes wrong when the other half leaves the state I used to say mine walked between rain drops when my kids were young.

PS I think we should all charge admission when we go to the ER for those that have never seen one of those things. The only upside to it is that if you are feeling well enough it gives you a great chance to give the blc 101 course it is intresting how few doctors and nurses know a thing about it.

Hi Sharon!

I too had terrible problems with mucous blockages post op - even though I've always had to cath. I was advised to flush the neobladder myself. Not the easiest of tasks it has to be said but was possible using bag of saline with a tube on it which I could attach to a size 16 or 18 catheter. (I usually use a size 14 cath) I did it once a day for a while post op. I generally only get mucous when I'm brewing a UTI 16 months post op.

Send me a PM if you need more info!

Best wishes,

Betsy Mae

Well I had my first trip to the ER today. Since Wednesday I have been in pain and not able to void more than 100cc at a time, when I would try to cath it seemed to get blocked. Being snowed in here on the Island I knew I would never make the journey to Seattle. Calling my Dr he advised me to go to the Urgent Care here in town when I got there they looked at me like I was nuts and said we aren't touching you. Go to the ER, getting back in my truck I made the normal 20 minute drive to the local ER in 1/ 1/2 hours. They got me in right away. Seems I had a really bad mucus block. Of course once they were able to get a larger cath in my relief was great. I have the beginning signs of a UTI so they have started me on Cipro. The funny thing is I had plenty of Dr's that came in to see me and Nurses all curious about my Neo-Bladder. I felt like I was at a freak show. 5 hours later I was released and made my long journey home. Now we have another storm approaching and the husband is in San Diego and I am praying nothing happens between now and when he gets home on the 22nd. Any suggestions on how to keep my new bladder from backing up? I do irrigate once a week and try to drink 4 to 5 bottles of water a day.:(
